THE family of a pensioner who died in a car crash have spoken of their shock and grief.

Mary Coverdale, 83, of Pickwick Close, Malton, was killed when the blue Peugeot 306 car that she was a passenger in was involved in a collision with a red Renault Scenic on the B1253 Burton Fleming and Kilham crossroads at 2.10pm last Wednesday. Her husband John, also 83, suffered fractured ribs and stomach injuries in the crash.

Mrs Coverdale’s brother, David Brand, of Howe Close, Norton, said: “I will miss her enormously. She was a very easy going person – easy to talk to and sociable.”

Jean Brand, her sister-in-law, said that Mary and her husband were a close couple who enjoyed each other’s company. They used to drive to Bridlington every Wednesday.

Next door neighbour Evelyn Magson said: “Mary was a very hard working lady.

“She used to be up at the crack of dawn doing housework, and she was very good to me when I came out of hospital in January.”

Mrs Coverdale was born in Malton. The couple bought a farm in Marton-cum-Grafton in the 1950s.

On retiring, they moved to Broughton, then to Bridlington, and then to Malton in 2007.

A 22-year-old woman from Kilham, who was driving the Renault Scenic, sustained a broken arm in the accident.

Anyone with information relating to the crash is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222 quoting log number 340 of July 22.
