THE best entries since the outbreak of foot and mouth disease nearly a decade ago – that was the verdict on yesterday’s 143rd Ryedale Show which saw one of its biggest-ever crowds despite some heavy showers.

Show secretary Peter Woodall, who is retiring from the post after next year’s show on the completion of 40 years, said people had been so keen to get to the Welburn Park showground that it was filling up by 9.30am – two hours earlier than normal.

Traffic queues reached as far back as Pickering on the A170 at one point, said Mr Woodall, who added that the crowd was expected to have matched last year’s 15,000-plus when the attendance figures were assessed.

In nearly all the classes, entries were up, with the horse section being particularly high and those in the horticulture marquees benefiting from the good summer weather.

“Agriculture in Ryedale has gone through a much better period in the last 18 months,” said Mr Woodall, and the show had benefited, he believed, from retaining its reputation as a traditional agricultural event and not being tempted to stage big-style entertainments and other attractions.

The biggest problem facing the Ryedale and Pickering Lythe Agricultural Society, which stages the show, is the shortage of space, especially for trade stands.

“We have a waiting list of 50 businesses wanting space,” he said.

Judging the trade stands this year was Coun Di Keal, chairman of Ryedale District Council, and her husband, Howard.

She said: “The show has been really buoyant and shows that farming is very much alive and well in Ryedale.”

Howard, also a Ryedale District councillor added: “The show’s success proves there is a will and determination to do business despite the recession.”

Among the successes of the show were the growing number of entries in the dog classes – nearly 500 – and the Yorkshire Countrywomen Association’s tent, where the Ryedale branches of Farndale, Slingsby and Wombleton filled the tables with entries in cookery, flowers, handicrafts, artwork and photography classes.
