Malton and Norton cut speed limit to 20mph

REDUCED speed limits are set to be introduced in Malton and Norton, members of Malton Town Council have been told.

Richard Marr, the county council’s area highways manager, said Commercial Street, Norton, and Butcher Corner, Market Place, Market Street and Horsemarket Road, Malton, are all due to become 20mph zones. In addition, speed humps are to be built in some areas.

Coun Mike Knaggs called for a 30mph zone in Castle Howard Road, which is to be investigated.

* The new footpath scheme, costing £180,000, in York Road, Malton, which has resulted in temporary traffic lights being in place for several weeks, is due for completition by Friday, Mr Marr told a recent meeting.

Coun Michael Beckett asked if and when improvements might be carried out to the Broughton Road junction with the A64.

Mr Marr said that the scheme would have to compete with others in other parts of Yorkshire and he believed it would have to be part funded through money provided by house builders in the area.

Coun Jason Fitzgerald-Smith said he supported the scheme because it would benefit both Malton and Norton by taking through traffic out of the towns.

* Coun Knaggs suggested that if the Morrisons supermarket plan is approved, a bridge should be built from the car park over the River Derwent to create a one-way system to the old electricity board yard, to avoid increased traffic problems in Malton town centre.

* The footpath between Broughton and Malton is to be resurfaced in late July or early August to improve the surface, said Mr Marr.

However, it is not to be widened to cope with cyclists as well as pedestrians because it does not have a high enough score. That scheme will be reviewed at a later date.

* The long-running problem of smelling gullies at Butcher Corner is to be tackled by the highways department.
