A RETIRED nurse is taking steps to raise money for cancer support.

Joan Myers, 67, who lives in Hutton-le- Hole, is walking across the Humber Bridge, the world’s fifth largest suspension bridge, on Sunday, May 17, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Joan has had first hand experience of the work that Macmillan nurses do after she was diagnosed with cancer herself last year.

Joan was told she had cancer in April 2008, and six weeks later she underwent surgery.

She has signed up to do the Humber Bridge walk along with her husband, Alan, and her two grandsons Dan, eight, and Mark, four.

Joan’s sister Margaret has also been diagnosed with cancer, and is current having chemotherapy, so Joan is doing the walk in her name.

She said: “The support Macmillan provides can be invaluable.

“Talking about what you are going through when you have cancer is such a help, but it can be hard to talk about everything without upsetting your nearest and dearest.

“It is wonderful to have someone who is detached from the situation to turn to.”

The Humber Bridge Walk will not be the first event that Joan has taken part in to raise money for Macmillan.

After reading an article in the Women’s Institute magazine, she organised a coffee morning as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, at Rosedale Village Hall, raising £600.

Sally Millington, fundraising manager at Macmillan, said: “I am so pleased that Joan and her family will be joining us for the Humber Bridge Walk.

“We are hoping that the weather will be good and that people will be able to bring a picnic along to enjoy on the day.

“The money raised will allow us to keep providing practical, medical and financial support to people affected by cancer, along with the emotional support Joan described.”
