TWO old pennies which are part of a Second World War episode have become the latest acquisition at Malton’s Eden Camp.

They were given to the donor, Vicky Godfrey by her father when she lived in Holland.

They had been given to him as a gift for his daughter from British airmen who were hiding in their home during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Nick Hill, museum curator, said the house was eventually raided by the Gestapo and the evaders executed. But Mrs Godfrey kept the two pennies she had been given by the airmen.

Eden Camp is home to one of the most comprehensive exhibitions on escape and evasion in the world.

Nick said. “The exhibition has been put together with help and support of the Escape Lines Memorial Society, an international society whose membership includes ex-British, US and Commonwealth military personnel who either evaded capture in enemy territory or escaped from POW camps and made it back to safety.

Each year members come together from all over the world to hold a memorial service in front of their international memorial which stands in the grounds of Eden Camp.
