RYEDALE Police are planning to crackdown on cyclists who ride at night without lights and along footpaths.

The warning has come from PC Paul Storey, the Safer Neighbourhood Team Officer for Pickering. He said there were too many people riding along footpaths, so they would be targeting the Pickering area from Monday.

At first it would be an educational process, especially for those under 16, “but after that we will go for a more enforcement stage,” he said.

He added: “The majority of cyclists do have lights but a significant number do not and they also tend to use the footpaths, which can be a danger to others. The campaign will take place at any time, including the dark. We and the community police support officers use cycles as part of our patrols. We have the correct gear and hope people will do the same.”

They will advice people on the correct clothing that they ought to wear, including fluorescent clothes and helmets, and to make sure they have lights and brakes in working order.
