TWENTY FIVE people are believed to have lost their jobs after a car showroom in Malton ceased trading.

Barker’s Peugeot garage on York Road removed all the cars from its forecourt on Thursday and staff members were made redundant.

Audrey Jackson, 56, who worked as a rental manager at the showroom, said: “We have now finished trading. I don’t know the exact reason but I presume it’s financial.

“I have lost my job, everybody has, and people are feeling pretty gutted. I’ll just get out there and start looking for another job, but it won’t be easy, as a lot of other people are out looking as well.”

The announcement came amid rumours that jobs may go at another car dealership - Malton Motors on York Road.

The Gazette & Herald approached Inchcape, which owns Malton Motors, and a spokesman said: “We are going through a cost exercise in the UK and a consultation exercise with our people.”

Inchcape said it could not give any further details about what this might mean for the future of the garage.
