Ryedale MP's £45k 'outside payments'

RYEDALE'S Conservative MP John Greenway received up to £45,000 in outside payments in the past year, new figures have revealed.

Among the payments to Mr Greenway was £5,000 to £10,000 from bookmakers Tote, for work as a consultant.

He advised the Tote on its public policies on horseracing, according to the new Parliamentary register of MPs’ interests.

Last week, the Government decided to postpone the sale of the publicly-owned Tote, as the market conditions were “not appropriate”.

Mr Greenway’s declarations also included payments for non-Parliamentary work he does for insurance firms and payments of up to £5,000 the Institute of Sales Promotion, the British Promotional Merchandising Association and the Incentive Travel and Meetings Association.

He is also a paid director of three companies.

Mr Greenway said: “What people need to understand is that I am standing down at the next election. There was the danger of an election a year ago.

“I am trying to ensure the things I do have a Parliamentary dimension, which they do, and it does not impact on my job. None of it impacts on my duties as an MP for Ryedale.”

Several of Mr Greenway’s interests have been in place for several years, but others were added more recently.

Conservative front-bencher Anne McIntosh, who represents the Vale of York and is the prospective parliamentary candidate for the new Thirk and Malton constituency, declared a half-share in a smallholding in County Durham.
