VANDALS have struck for the second time in two weeks at the site of a high-profile historic building project.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to Howsham Mill after an arson attack at the beauty spot on Friday night (July 19).
Over the previous weekend, a wooden lean-to was pulled down and set on fire and empty bottles of alcohol were discovered at the scene.
The recent spate of vandalism started in May when intruders left a trail of destruction causing damage estimated between £5,000 and £10,000 at the historic site.
Mo Macleod, head of the Renewable Heritage Trust, which is masterminding the restoration, said: “This damage is so wanton and senseless.”
Two years ago, the historic mill was narrowly pipped at the post for a £1 million cash prize in the BBC TV Restoration series but since then the trust has attracted funding from a wide range of other sources and donations to enable the restoration to continue.
The complete restoration work of Howsham Mill is expected to cost between £900,000 and £1 million.
PC Terry Triffitt, of the Safer Ryedale Partnership, said: “This was mindless vandalism carried out at a lovely old building which is becoming so well restored by hardworking people.
