Crucial meetings on future of towns

TWO meetings crucial to the future development of Malton and Norton are being held next week.

Businesses from both towns are being asked to attend a meeting being called by Business in Action at The Old Lodge Hotel, at 6pm on Wednesday.

Denys Townsend, chairman of the group, said the traders would be asked to put forward their views on two issues - their preferred site for the livestock market - the present one, or the suggested alternative of Showfield Lane - and on the proposed building of a supermarket on Wentworth Street car park.

In addition, Roddy Bushell, manager of the Fitzwilliam Estate, had been asked to give a presentation on the estate's plans for Malton town centre, said Mr Townsend.

"We are hoping that from the meeting we shall be able to give considered views to Ryedale District Council on the proposed developments. We want businesses to come along and give us their views.

If they don't, they won't be able to complain if they get something they don't like."

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Ryedale Business Network is holding a meeting at Malton's Talbot Hotel at 6pm when a representative of the Fitzwilliam Estate will be speaking about its role in Malton.

The meeting will be offering advice to small businesses, said the Network's secretary, Dave Garner. While membership of the Network is £40 a year, visitors can attend the Talbot Hotel presentation for £10 which will include a buffet. To book a place call 08444 843587.
