Town launches pride campaign

A CAMPAIGN to tackle litter, anti-social behaviour and parking in a Ryedale market town was launched at a special meeting last night.

The Pride in Pickering initiative was revealed to the public at the gathering held in the memorial hall and aims to improve life for all residents living in the town.

Over the course of the year, the committee hopes to enlist the help of groups and individuals to make the town more attractive and wheelchair-friendly, clean the beck, look after parks, provide seating, tackle litter and yobbish behaviour, encourage tourism and improve parking.

Councillors will head sub-committees to oversee the work in the town.

And to coincide with the launch, winners of the design a logo competition for the scheme, Millie Barnes and Douglas Faulds, both aged 10, were commended for their artistic efforts.

Their contribution even came to the notice of government officials who sent a special message of praise to the assembly.

In the statement, Rosie Winterton, minister for Yorkshire & Humberside, said: "Congratulations to the winners of the logo competition. It is pleasing to see young people involved in their communities.

Across Yorkshire and the Humberside it is good that young people are being valued and their achievements recognised and celebrated."

Millie's eye-catching logo will be used by Pickering Town Council throughout their campaign.
