NORTON Urban Council had good news for ratepayers and tenants of council houses at its budget meeting on Monday.

The rate is reduced by 2d to 18s and as a result of representations to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government the council has been able to avoid increasing council house rents by 1s, as has been feared might be necessary.

Presenting the finance committee's budget recommendations, Coun D A Mackinnon, chairman, said the total estimated expenditure was £13,906, which was only £63 more than last year's estimate.

Provision had been made for all the council's services to be properly and efficiently maintained as in the past.

A gift of £100 by Mr and Mrs Jonathan Cordukes of Kennythorpe, which was announced soon after the opening of the new Methodist Chapel at Burythorpe, meant that the chapel was clear of debt.

Mr Cordukes, who is a retired farm worker, and Mrs Cordukes are both over 80 years of age. They have attended the Methodist church at Burythorpe for many years.

The new chapel, which replaces a building which had become unsafe for public use, has cost nearly £3,000. It has seating accommodation for over 100 and has a vestry and cloakrooms.
