The Rev Arthur Bailey, Supt Minister of the Malton Methodist circuit and a prominent campaigner against alcohol, led the opposition to an application for an occasional licence to sell intoxicants at a ball at the Pickering Memorial Hall on Easter Monday.

Douglas William Bowman, licensee of the Rose Inn, Pickering, made the application before a special sitting of the Pickering magistrates on Friday. The licence was from 9.30pm to 12.30am and the ball is being organised by the Pickering branch of the British Legion, in aid of legion funds.

After listening to strong opposition from Mr Bailey, in which he referred to the considerable feeling which had been roused in the town and district as a result of the decision to allow bar facilities at the Memorial Hall, the bench granted the licence.

Any bargaining power Malton and Norton Urban Councils had in connection with taking over Blackboards Road and the Railway Bridge had been undermined by Norton Council agreeing on exceedingly reasonable terms and conditions at the last moment and without any further reference to the joint sub-committee, Mr W J Little, clerk to Malton Urban Council, told the Gazette & Herald this week.

Mr Little was replying to allegations by Norton councillors that Malton Council had been dilatory and un-cooperative in the joint negotiations with British Railways.
