ARMED police, fire crews and paramedics were last night called to a serious incident in Darlington which saw people evacuated from nearby homes.

Durham Police asked people to avoid the Stockton Road area of the town.

People living in the area were evacuated and took shelter in the Highland Laddie pub. They were allowed home at about 11.30pm and the cordon was taken down.

An earlier police statement said: "Due to an ongoing police incident Stockton Road, Darlington is currently closed. We have no ETA of when this will be reopened however we will keep you updated. Please avoid the area where possible."

Residents said the incident started at 7.15pm when two men started arguing in the street.

One resident said: “Armed police arrived pretty quickly and they soon had the road closed off. Everyone knows who it is."

At one stage about 30 people were stood at the police cordon watching the situation unfold.

Witnesses claimed a woman has been taken to hospital, and one woman claimed she fought off a man trying to attack her daughter.

The incident came to a conclusion just after 11pm when officers entered the terraced property while firefighters prepared to enter the building if necessary.
