YEAR 10 students at Norton College have been experiencing the world of work.

More than 125 pupils took part in a week-long placement in a local organisation or business to give them a taste of working life - with two students going as far afield as London and Mexico.

Leah Brown went down to the Houses of Parliament where she worked with the MP Kevin Hollinrake as a parliamentary assistant, while earlier in the year, Josh Ely had the opportunity to work as a drum technician with Harry Styles in Mexico.

This year’s placements also included working alongside software engineers, joiners, vets, stable owners, mechanics, pharmacists, teachers, scientists, artists, childminders, farmers, sports coaches and solicitors.

Kerry Megginson, pastoral leader for Year 10 and work experience co-ordinator, said: “Spending five days in the workplace gives the students a really important insight into the skills they need to be successful in a job, including timekeeping, engaging independently with tasks set, communicating clearly and working well in a team.

“We are always grateful to employers who take on our students as we understand the real effort and time it takes to give each of them a programme which is appropriate and meaningful. Every year feedback from employers and students is very positive.

“The college has outstanding local support from so many employers who make a real investment in the young people of their community.

“Offering work experience is a vital part of Norton’s ASPIRE values.”

The college work experience team would welcome any new employers interested in having a student. For details, email Kerry Megginson on km@nortoncollege.net or phone 01653 693296 ext 0211.
