I WRITE regarding the proposal by the York Central Partnership that traffic travelling along Leeman Road through Marble Arch may be reduced to one lane, controlled in either direction by high-tech traffic signals.
We have had promises in the past of similar devices at other junctions with little or no effect on the traffic flow: it just doesn’t work. All such a plan will do is create traffic queues at either end with engines running, adding further to the heavy pollution in areas of the city centre.
The first consideration for the Arch must be a massive refurbishment programme to improve the interiors of both tunnels, including lighting along the entire length.
Pedestrian visitors to the railway must be very disappointed with the disgusting state of the route to the home of the national treasures of our railway history.
Forget the stop-start light control signals and smarten up the area for all to enjoy.
I despair at the thought of who came up with such an idea. The sensible suggestion must to smarten it up and leave well alone.
