SO York City kick off the last season at Bootham Crescent tonight.

I’m very surprised that the club hasn’t anything in place to celebrate every home game in style.

You could tell from the day this season’s strip was revealed that no thought had been given to nostalgia.

This was a real opportunity for the club to make some much-needed revenue by asking the fans what they wanted, but that seems to have been the attitude for some time now: to alienate supporters and the financial lifeline.

The Supporters Trust tapped into the desire to mark the year with the strips organised for the ex-players match, and looking at comments on social media these shirts have sold in unprecedented numbers, even forcing the web page to crash.

Let’s hope the Trust don’t leave celebrations for the last ever match at home to the club board or it will just be another meaningless final game of the season.

It would be nice to invite all surviving players to take to the pitch one last time and to have a minute’s applause to remember all those sadly no longer with us - also half price or free admission to fill the old girl one last time wouldn’t go amiss after all the dross the fans have had to put up with over the last few years.
