YORK swimmer James Wilby took silver in the men's 200m breaststroke this evening at the European Championships.

The 24-year-old from Strensall added to his second place in Saturday's 100m breaststroke – behind fellow Brit Adam Peaty – with another fine display in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Peaty has shrugged off the timing controversy which saw his 100m world record retrospectively downgraded by 0.10 seconds.

The European Swimming Federation announced on yesterday that all times from the first nine races of Saturday's evening session would be adjusted due to the "incorrect configuration of the starting mechanism".

The move meant Peaty's initial timing of 57 seconds dead in winning the final becomes 57.10 – still enough for him to eclipse the previous world best of 57.13 he set in winning Olympic gold in Rio in 2016.

Peaty said: "The world record still stands and that is all that matters to me. I haven't broken it by that much but it means next time it becomes a little bit easier to break.

"Mistakes happen in all sports. There is no benefit in being sulky about it or spreading any negativity. A sport like this definitely needs some positivity to show how it's done.

"There is no negativity around it. I don't think there will be an issue ratifying it at all."
