THE heatwave and lack of rain in the UK (despite the recent downpour in York) have resulted in farmers telling us to expect price rises and shortages in carrots, potatoes, peas and onions.

Livestock are being fed winter rations now, which raises the problem of supply in winter.

But it’s not just us, across the EU farmers face the same scorching climate, only worse.

Our Government’s response is to go for 6,000 fracking wells in the next decade. To burn gas worsening the CO2 burden that is pushing our planet into a burnt cinder.

But, in this new era of water shortages in the hot, dry season, they want to pour up to 16 million gallons of pure water down each fracking well.

While the rest of us get lectured about having four minute showers and turning the tap off when brushing, the drilling companies can get away with turning our water supplies into polluted radioactive waste, which will eventually find its way back to harm people.

Fracking also causes earthquakes. We can be sure the politicians who are making this all possible are already washing their hands of all responsibility.

Scotland has sensibly blocked fracking. Can we?
