HOLGATE WMC have lifted the York Amateur Bowls Association's Williamson Cup while Dunnington have won the Freedom & Fellowship Cup.

Double-chasing Holgate WMC edged out Selby in the Williamson final at Dunnington Bowls Club.

Selby led by 11 shots after five ends but WMC found their feet and gradually pulled through at the end of a tight game to win 78-73.

The trophy was presented by league president Graham Bell to Holgate WMC secretary Steve Lea.

Dunnington beat division two side Clifton 82-64 in the Freedom & Fellowship Cup final at RI Bowls Club.

It was another close game with Clifton's mix of youth and experience putting up a great fight.

The cup was presented by the league's senior vice-president, Mick Spencer, to winning captain Dick Osguthorpe.

In the league, Holgate WMC had no fixture, which enabled Rowntree to move back to the summit - albeit having played more games than their title rivals - with a 7-1 win over Selby.

Dunnington rose to second with a convincing 8-0 victory over RI Corinthians at Ashton Lane, leaving Holgate WMC third but with games in hand on the two teams above.

Hull Road Park are bottom, with Osbaldwick, Dringhouses and Haxby Road looking to avoid the second relegation spot.

Osbaldwick battled hard against RI Amateurs but lost out 6-2 at Glen Gardens.

Poppleton went top of division two after 8-0 wins over Copmanthorpe and Minster in a rearranged game.

However, they have played three more games than closest rivals Clifton, whose game at Scarcroft was postponed.

Shipton stayed third after beating Stamford Bridge 6-2 in a close encounter in which the aggregate score was 86-73.

Poppleton Road WMC whitewashed Retreat at West Bank Park, while Minster beat West Park 7-1 at Clarence Gardens.

Meanwhile, unbeaten St Clements have been confirmed as York C&IU Afternoon League champions with two matches still to play.

They sealed the title despite being held to a 17-17 draw by Holgate 'B', while Railway Institute are also confirmed as runners-up after their 2-0 win at South Bank.

In the Evening League, Holgate rose to third after beating new champions Clarence.

Second-placed Railway Institute, with a game in hand and eight points from their 2-0 win against Burton Lane, are likely to keep the runners-up spot till the end of the season.

Meanwhile, league president Terry Wheatley has reached the final of the York C&IU singles competition and will meet either Kev Potter or John Cooper.

Wheatley, playing with Paul Milliner, has also reached the final of the Vets Pairs, where they will meet John and Pauline Cooper.
