THOUSANDS of visitors enjoyed a record-breaking Ryedale Show yesterday (Tuesday).

The show, which is one of the biggest one-day shows in the country, took place at Welburn Park, Kirkbymoorside, by kind permission of the Shaw family.

Show secretary Christine Thompson said this year’s show had attracted a quality field of exhibitors in all sections.

She said: “In the livestock classes, sheep entries are within two of last year’s record-breaking 1,154.

"Pig entries remain stable, cattle are slightly down on last year, however goat entries are at an all-time high of 39.

"Steph Myers had a bumper number of 609 entries in the fur and feather section and Malcolm Leckenby’s open produce entries have topped 1,800.

“Horse entries remain similar to last year and include some very high-profile exhibitors. The Horse of the Year Show and the Burghley Young Event horse qualifying classes have very good entries this year with exhibitors coming from all parts of the country.

“The farm produce section is at the highest level for some years with 69 entries, probably a sign of all this year’s crops being earlier than normal due to weather conditions.”

Christine said they expected visitor numbers to be about 15,000.

“The weather conditions have been ideal,” she said. “We had some much-needed rain which cleared for a day of sunshine and a light breeze.”

Christine, who has been secretary for four years, said a lot of work went on behind the scenes throughout the year.

She said: “It takes a huge amount of time and effort to bring the show together.

“A big thank you must go to all our section secretaries and willing volunteers without whom the show just wouldn’t happen. It all comes together on the day due to a massive team effort behind the scenes.”
