A GARAGE in the heart of Whitby’s conservation zone could be transformed into three new town houses.
Plans have been lodged with Scarborough Borough Council to transform the building, at 23-24 Church Street, into a terrace building of three homes, mirroring the design of the area.
However, as it falls within the protected area the applicant needs to show that the demolition and new build will not impact negatively on the street scene.
The application, prepared by Fox Architect and Design, states that: “It is considered that the proposed subject development, which involves the construction of three dwellings following the removal of unsightly commercial garage, will not lead to harm to the significance of the designated assets.”
It adds: “It is considered that the site in its current form owing to the form of development is unsightly and detrimental to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area and setting of the listed buildings.”
For many years the garage has been home to a motorcycle retailer and repair garage.
The plans are now out to public consultation.
