A NEW exhibition at Gallery Beyond in Nunnington showcases work inspired by the natural environment.

The show is being curated by Louise Dwyer in collaboration with Kevin Bradshaw, director of Gallery Beyond.

Louise said: “Putting together this exhibition, my starting point was the words of Coleridge, ‘from men and cattle and the common birds of the woods and fields the greater becomes in me the intensity of the feeling of life.’

Louise is working with artists who are passionate about the environment and about the preservation of our planet.

Language for the Landscape includes work by painter Liz Churton and ceramicists Iona Topp and Katie Braida.

Liz is a landscape painter, printmaker and animator deeply involved in the British countryside. When painting, she works in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, watercolour and pastel - often combining all of these in a single piece of work. Her paintings are vibrant and full of a sense, not only of the landscape, but also of the elements within that landscape.

Iona is a North Yorkshire based ceramicist making beautifully functional homewares - bowls, plates and vessels in soft, organic colours that compliment the materials she uses -white stoneware and porcelain. Her work is inspired by the simplicity and use of raw and earthy materials.

Katie makes dramatic ceramic vessels that reference the natural environment through her observations of the landscape and seascape near where she lives in North Yorkshire. Using a limited palette of colour, Katie glazes the insides of her vessels to contrast with their matt exterior. Katie is greatly inspired by the sea, she regularly swims in the sea off Scarborough) and by the Blue Planet II series - like many, is horrified by the shocking impact human beings have on the environment.
