A FARNDALE farmer has had his hair and iconic mutton chops shaved off - and raised more than £2,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Andy Fawbett went under the clippers at the Feversham Arms in Church Houses in Farndale.

His friend Joan Myers said the idea started at another fundraiser for St Catherine’s where Andy was selling tickets. “He hadn’t had his hair or sideburns cut in six months. He said, ‘I will when it warms up a bit’,” she said.

They had the idea of being sponsored to do it and they planned it with the help of Rachel Forster, landlady at the Feversham Arms. They then asked local hairdresser Lindsay Dale, who said she was all for it.

Ms Myers said: “It was a packed night and a wonderful night. There were lots of prizes for the raffle. A big thank you to the sponsors and to Rachel - she’d already collected a lot before we got there and we couldn’t have done it without her.”

As part of the fundraising, a bucket was also passed round at Richardson and Smith livestock auctioneers of Whitby, which collected £300. The total raised for St Catherine’s was £2,022.07.
