BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Village hall - The next Village Ventures community lunch will take place on Wednesday, July 18 with the hall doors opening at 12.15pm. The community Post Office will be open in the hall during the lunch time and until 3.30pm. There is no Village Ventures lunch next month and the kitchen will hopefully be refurbished during the planned two-week closure during the second half of August.

Parish council - The next meeting of Brompton and Sawdon Parish Council takes place on Monday, July 16 at Sawdon Village Hall starting at 7.30pm. The meetings are open to members of the community.

School - Brompton and Sawdon Community Primary School will welcome visitors to the open evening on Monday, July 16 between 3.30pm and 6pm. It is an opportunity to look round and see the way in which the school has changed during the past 140 years and how it continues to develop.

Church - Thanks to several donations work will start soon on repairing the church clock and getting it in good running order. Services are continuing with the help of other clergy, and of the churchwardens, while the vicar, the Rev Stuart Hill, is on sick leave. This Sunday there will a 9.30am communion service conducted by the Rev Sue Bond from Ampleforth. Terry Cartlidge will play the organ and there will be coffee afterwards.

HOVINGHAM

Market - There was an excellent turnout of volunteers to set up the village’s monthly market on

Saturday. Guest stall Rafi’s Spices had a good day, Slingsby Primary School sold lots of ducks for its duck race this Saturday and the Woodland Trust stall attracted had a lot of interest. Josh the busker was in fine voice and the cafe run by Hovingham Tennis Club sold out of sausage and bacon butties. The next market will be on Saturday, August 4.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met recently at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive, for a members’ evening. Paul Stevenson, John Clifton and David Ireland gave presentations on their introduction into photography. A photographic evening has been arranged to visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway engine sheds at Grosmont on Thursday, July 19. The club’s next meeting will be a creative competition on Thursday, August 2.

Garden party - The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will host a garden party at Dorothy’s home in West Lund Lane on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Entry is free and there will be the usual stalls including raffle, tombola. Cream teas will be served.

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church on Monday, July 16 from 4pm in the Methodist Church.

Ladies Fellowship - Members will be visiting Dorothy’s garden in West Lund Lane at the earlier time of 7pm today and are encouraged to take a garden chair.

Summer fair - All Saints Church will host a summer fair in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 28 from 9.30am to 12.30pm. It will include a bottle stall, jams, pickles, plants, books, jigsaws, home-baked cakes, raffle and a tombola.

Heritage day - Kirkbymoorside Heritage Day, sponsored by Kirkbymoorside Town Council, will be on Saturday, July 28 from 9.30am until 4.30pm in the Methodist Chapel rooms, Piercy End. The theme will be Lest We Forget, commemorating the end of the First World War and the impact it had on the town. There will be displays, exhibits, books and information as well as cakes and coffee. Entrance will be £2 and there will be a tour of All Saints Churchyard at 1pm, with the opportunity to learn more about the residents who didn’t return home from the Front. Local actor Dominic Goodwin will present a selection from his upcoming revue in the Memorial Hall from 7pm and 9pm. There will also be a chance to learn about the Memorial Hall and gift from Captain Frank, who served in the Tank Corps, to the town. Sturdy Court - The next domino drive at the centre is on Monday, July 16 at 7.30pm.

MALTON

Bridge club - Edward Robinson and Dave Massey were the winners in the latest summer session at Malton Bridge Club. Philip Mason and Rob Ashdown finished in second place with Anthony and Moira Brown third.

NAWTON

Potato challenge - The weigh-in for the village potato challenge will be held at the Recreation Ground on Sunday from 2pm. There will be prizes for the largest potato for adults and children. The afternoon

is also a fun day to include a barbecue, coconut shy, football games, egg throwing, children’s races, raffle and tombola. Entry to the event is

free.

PICKERING

Gala day - Ryedale Sports Club, which is based in Thornton Road will hold its annual rounders tournament at its gala day on Sunday, July 22 from 11am until late afternoon. Other activities include a bouncy castle, raffle, tombola, barbecue, ice cream and a bar. Car parking and entry is free.

Board games - People who love board games will be meeting at the Friends’ Meeting House, Castlegate, between 6pm and 8pm on Sunday. It is an opportunity to take your own game and teach others, as well as learn new ones.

Kirk Theatre - Country and Western singer Howard Hebron will be appearing at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, on Friday at 7.30pm.

Domino league - The annual general meeting of Pickering Domino League will be held at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Wednesday, July 25 at 8pm. All teams are invited to attend with at least one representative. New teams for the 2018-19 season are needed. If you are interested, go to the meeting and make yourself known. Domino drives - Pickering Town FC will be hosting a domino drive at the Recreation Ground, Mill Lane, on Friday, July 20 at 7.30pm.

No winner - Last week’s Pickering Town FC’s weekly Super Draw for £1,050 was not won. The numbers drawn were 32, 15 and 31. This week’s draw will be increased to £1,125. The July consolation draw was also made with the treble draw winner being Anthony Ward of Pickering who won £150. His numbers were 15 and 32. To enter the draw costs £1 per week per entry. As well as the £75 weekly prize, which is carried over if there is no winner, there is a monthly consolation prize draw for £50 made on the first Monday of each month.

Welcome Church - There will be a Creative Day for all at Welcome Church at 3pm on Sunday in the Mille Suite at the Memorial Hall.

Jazz festival - The sixth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz will be held in the town from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. The cost of tickets is £60 for the Monday to Saturday concerts and £12 for the individual concerts. Bridge club - Anne Avery and George Goodall won the session at North/South on Tuesday, July 3 with 57.5 per cent. Second were Bob Price and Trevor Hardcastle with 56.8 per cent. East/West winners were Peter Small and Bryan Wilson with 62.5 per cent. In second place were Bo and Tony Simpson on 58.3 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting Jennie’s mega quiz at the Fleece on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 and includes cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper. Gary’s Team were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz and the jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion at St Martin’s Church on Sunday. His sermon, using the Bible readings of the day, looked at how everyone needs a base on which to build a life of faith. Frances Simons read one of the Bible readings, Jo Thompson assisted with the distribution of communion and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Trish Winlayson and Elizabeth Chapman were sidespersons and Sue Johnson and Enid Plevey served refreshments. Steve Raettig led the service of modern worship at 11am. His theme was labels - the way people often use stereotypical, negative words to describe and categorise not just others but ourselves, undermining our sense of self-worth. Steve also played keyboard in the worship band with Richard Fuller, Chloe Proctor and John Taylor. Esme Raettig took the offering and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Afternoon tea - The St Martin’s Church fundraising committee is holding an afternoon tea event in the garden of Richard and Marlene Parnell in Main Street, Irton on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a full afternoon tea on offer, all homemade, to be enjoyed outside in the garden. There will also be a cake stall. There will be a charge of £5 per person with all proceeds going towards the church porch door renovation appeal. Entry to the garden is best approached from the lay-by on the main road from Seamer to Irton just after the entrance to Irton village and will be indicated by balloons.

Methodists - The preacher at the service of Sunday was the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd. The organist was Doreen Lawson and the door steward was Margaret Harris. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman. During the service, the baptism of Emilie Louise Blott and Theodore Allan John McLane, children of Kerry and Ryan, and Ria and Greg, was celebrated. They were each presented with a Bible and a baptism candle by Mandy Clayton. Margaret Neave read the lesson from St Mark’s gospel in which Jesus called the children unto Him. Eileen Burn assisted with Holy Communion which was celebrated during the service. The offering was received by Sheila and Margaret, and refreshments were served after the service. There will be no monthly coffee morning this Saturday due to the annual Seamer Fair day coffee morning at the Memorial Hall.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The Sunday worship was led by Barbara Grice. The sides people were Angela Holdsworth and Keith Usher and music was provided by Bill Hyndford. Christine Ashton read the lesson from Timothy and Barbara spoke on its theme, Fight the Good Fight. After the service coffee was served by Jean Usher and helpers. This Sunday there will be a united service at St Hilda’s with members of the Methodist Church starting at 10.30am, when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate at Holy Communion. He will be assisted by the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd, who will also be the preacher. After the service, a light luncheon will be served. On Sunday, July 22, there will again be the normal monthly Holy Communion service at 9am. There will be no coffee served after this service as it is open gardens day. Ten gardens and the church will be open to the public from noon to 5pm. Programmes will be available from the village hall where refreshments will be on sale. There will also be a tombola. Entry is £4 to cover all gardens and children under 16 are free if accompanied by an adult. Any donations of tombola prizes and cakes will be appreciated and may be left with Carol Stephenson, 3 Sycamore Grove, Barbara Grice or any Parochial Church Council member. The proceeds will be divided between St Hilda’s Church and St Catherine’s Hospice.

Messy Church - Youngsters will meet for an outdoor event at 4.45pm on Saturday at the home of Mr and Mrs C Cade, Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street. There will be a picnic tea and the children will hear about Paul the tentmaker and then build at tent.

Luncheon Club – Members of the Senior Citizens’ Luncheon Club will meet at the Methodist Chapel Hall on Wednesday, July 18 from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport within the village can be arranged if needed by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Methodist news - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Pat Woodley and the donations mean the target for the Air Ambulance has almost been reached. The Sunday worship was led by Paul Midgley.

The welcomer was Sandra Cade, who also led our prayers for others, and the opening worship was led by organist Chris Cade and guitarist Robin Magowan. Reader Kim Canterbury was also the offertory steward and Liz Aconley operated the audio-visual equipment. Paul spoke about making the decision to follow Jesus Christ and not deflecting from commitment to Him.

After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. This Sunday there will be no service in the chapel as there will be a united worship with friends at St Hilda’s Church at 10.30am. It will be a Holy

Communion service led by Rev Joe Kinsella with Rev Dr Kevin Ridd the preacher. A light luncheon will follow.

Letters draw - There was no winner in Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday. The letters were A, E and P. This week’s prize fund stands at £90.

SNAINTON

Marie Curie - People are invited to have a cuppa and a slice of cake at Stone Lodge, Croft Lane, between 10am and 3pm on Saturday to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. There will be a chance to win raffle prizes including afternoon tea at the Palm Court Hotel, Scarborough, as well as prizes from Cedar Barn, Baldersons, Dean’s Garden Centre and Proudfoots. There is no charge for entry, but boxes will be provided for donations to Marie Curie.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies Group - The monthly meeting was held last Thursday when the leader Philippa Preston welcomed everyone and introduced Michael Bursell who gave a talk called Winkles to Walls. He spoke about his childhood in Filey spending time fishing and sitting on the doorstep eating winkles. He then went on to talk of his occupation as a dry-stone wall maker and of the interesting people he met and of the many farmers who needed their walls repairing. He showed articles, ranging from bottles of various sizes to a pair of old spectacles, he had found hidden in some of the walls. He was thanked by Margaret and tea was served by Mary and Sue. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September when the speaker will be from Ryedale Vinyard.

Bridge club - The meeting on Monday, July 2 was won by Pat and George Donnor with 62.7 per cent. In second place with 54 per cent were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell.

WESTOW

Car boot - There will be a car boot sale at the cricket ground on Sunday from 10am until 1pm. Proceeds are in aid of the cricket club. Entry for cars is £5. The club will be having a table top stall as well as selling tea, coffee, home baking and bacon sandwiches.

WI REPORTS

Appleton-le-Moors - Local photographer Dave Mead, paid a return visit to the branch at its June meeting. He delighted members and guests with a presentation of photographs from recent adventures in Namibia. Glennis Whyte, a National Trust volunteer, will give a talk called The House Built On Chocolate, at the next meeting. It is about Goddards, the NT property in York. The talk will be followed by a visit to the house, and afternoon tea, later in the year.

Helmsley - The branch’s annual outing was on Thursday, June 28 when members travelled by coach to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool. After a guided tour of HMS Trincomalee, which is the oldest British warship still afloat, there was free time to explore the recreated 18th century seaport buildings and the Museum of Hartlepool. After lunch there was shopping in the nearby retail park. The next meeting is at 7.30pm on Thursday, July 26 when the guest speaker will be the botanical artist Bridget Gillespie who has been awarded three gold medals from the Royal Horticultural Society. Branch meetings are held at the headquarters of the North York Moors National Park, Bondgate, and new members and guests are welcome.

Malton - The branch held a Pimms and pudding evening at its June meeting attended by 25 ladies. This has become an annual event which has been hosted by member Ellen at her home. Puddings were taken to share, and boules and croquet were played in the front garden. The rear garden had groups of tables and chairs scattered round to encourage ladies to mingle which proved beneficial to the new members. The evening raised more than £200 and a couple of new members were recruited for the branch. The

branch will meet on Thursday, July 26, at the reading rooms of St Leonard’s Church, 7pm for 7.30pm, before heading off on a foraging field trip. For membership inquiries email maltonwi@hotmail.co.uk
