APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Work postponed - The Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood on Saturday, June 30 has been cancelled due to holiday commitments. The next work task will be on Saturday, July 28 at 10am although an impromptu event may be organised in early July.

Barbecue - The annual village barbecue will be held in the village hall on Saturday, July 14 at 5pm.

On stage - My Brilliant Divorce will be performed by the Library Theatre Touring Co in the village hall, Wilsons Lane, East Ayton on Friday at 7pm. Play time - Dominic Goodwin and Cal Stockbridge will be performing the play Kaiser And I in the village hall on Thursday, July 5. It is set in 1914 before the start of the First World War when Kaiser Wilhelm invited an English dance instructress to put his officers through their paces. From ballroom to battlefield and beyond, the two-hander charts the friendship of a man and a woman caught in their nations’ crossfire. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Poetry Festival - The town is to host a poetry festival in September called This Way Delight. Organised by the Kirkdale Heritage Herbert Read Forum, it will honour both local and international poets with readings and singing lyrics on love and landscape, peace and war. Venues will be announced as soon as the organisers have a nucleus of helpers. A large resource of individual writers and anthologies is available to support readers. Heritage day - The next Kirkbymoorside Heritage Day, sponsored by Kirkbymoorside Town Council, will be on Saturday, July 28, from 9.30am to 4.30pm in the Methodist Chapel rooms. The theme will be Lest We Forget, commemorating the end of the First World War and the impact it had on the town. There will be displays, exhibits, books and information as well as cakes and coffee. Entrance will be £2 and there will be a tour of All Saints Churchyard at 1pm, with the opportunity to learn more about the residents who didn’t return home from the Front. Local actor Dominic Goodwin will present a selection from his upcoming revue in the Memorial Hall from 7pm and 9pm. There will also be a chance to learn about the Memorial Hall and gift from Captain Frank, who served in the Tanks Corps, to the town. Car boot - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie is holding a country house car boot sale at Welburn Manor on Sunday by permission of Colonel and Mrs J Shaw. Musical evening - All Saints Church will host a musical evening on Friday, July 6 with Paul Tranmer and friends, featuring Alastair Coughlan, Marjorie Coughlan, Clare Haynes, Liz Sayers and the Northern Ryedale Singers. Ladies Fellowship - Angus Ashworth, the town mayor, spoke at this month’s meeting about his career as an auctioneer. He also valued and chatted about several items brought to the meeting by members. Margaret Carter and Eleanor Harrison were the tea hostesses. The June birthday girls were Dorothy Collis, Ann Gray and Ruth Lomax and Dorothy Masterman celebrates her birthday in early July. On Wednesday, July 11, members will be visiting Dorothy’s garden in West Lund Lane at the earlier time of 7pm. If any member has a garden chair they should take it along. If it should rain the meeting will be held in the Friends’ Meeting House, West End.

Tuesday Group - There will be a meeting in the Methodist Jubilee room on Tuesday, June 26, at 7.30pm or an evening with the Rev Tanya Short. Anne is the leader and the tea hostesses are Audrey and Rosie.

Coffee morning - Through its fundraising, Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice has so far raised the following: cake stall, £215; quiz night, £250; prize bingo, £318 and Gwen’s quiz, £376. There have also been individual donations.

Bridge club - The club’s annual summer lunch was held on Tuesday, June 12 when there was a draw for playing partners. North/South winners were Mary Mortenson and Angela Smith with 61 per cent. Tony Ward and Eileen Harward were second on 53 per cent. Christine Roberts Holland and Clarissa Napier were top East/West with 58 per cent. Menzown - Young graduate Brandon Stock from Nawton spoke at the June meeting of Menzown about his three months in Mkindow, Tanzania, with Raleigh International. He helped to install sanitation and water facilities in the local school. Leslie Ayling led the vote of thanks. Gordon Clithero will speak about the Rosedale mining and railway at the meeting on Monday, July 9 in the King’s Head at 7.30pm. New members welcome.

Horticultural Society - This year’s open show is on Saturday, September 22 in the Memorial Hall. The society would welcome any new hands who would like to help on the day of the show or on the Friday evening to help with the staging. It is also looking for donation for its tombola. LEAVENING

Village fete - The annual fete will take place on the school playing field, Malton Road, on Sunday, July 8, starting at 2pm. There will be children’s races and singing, stalls, games, coconut shy, tombola, refreshments, a bar and barbecue from the Jolly Farmers pub, bouncy castle and a demonstration of sheep shearing. Tea and cake will be provided by the Friends of Leavening School. There will also be a raffle with prizes, including a Robert Fuller print.

Movable feast - More than £1,200 was raised at the recent church movable feast.

Garage sale - The garage sale on June 10 was a success and helped help raise money for the play area maintenance fund.

NAWTON

Prize bingo - There will be a prize bingo to raise funds for the village hall in the hall on Saturday, July 7 at 7.30pm. The August bingo will be the last regular bingo, but it is hoped to hold one at Christmas.

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE

Anniversary service - The annual choir anniversary service will be held in the Methodist Chapel at 6.15pm on Sunday. It will be led by Jackie Recchia, with items sung by the choir. Supper will be served in the village hall after the service. It will be the last anniversary service to be held in the chapel, as it will close later in the year.

NORTON

Parkinson’s group - The June meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group was held in Trinity Methodist Church when Jill Smith of Binnington Blooms was the demonstrator. She explained the growing of farm fresh flowers, making bunches which were later given as raffle prizes. The next meeting is on Thursday, July 12 when Dr Steve Smith of York University will give his annual update on his research. OLD MALTON

Arboretum talk - Christine Pietrowski, a volunteer at the Yorkshire Arboretum, Castle Howard, gave a talk called If Only Trees Could Talk at the June meeting of St Mary’s Fellowship. She showed slides of the collection which has trees from all over the world, along with the wildlife and a meadow for wild flowers. A vote thanks was given by Sue Galley. After coffee, the business meeting discussed the coming fete and shop in town and the summer outing. The raffle was donated by Barbara Thackray. The group will meet again in September after the summer break.

PICKERING

Gala day - Ryedale Sports Club, based in Thornton Road, will hold its annual rounders tournament at its gala day on Sunday, July 22 from 11am until late afternoon at its headquarters. Other activities include bouncy castle, raffle, tombola, barbecue, ice cream and a bar. Car parking and entry is free.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, June 12 for lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Anthony Brown. James McMillan of Malton gave a talk on malt whisky. Club membership inquiries can be made by phoning 01751 472879.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge there were joint North/South winners, George Goodall and Anne Avery and the partnership of John Bramall and Graham Burgess both scored 55.5 per cent. Winners of East/West were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 65 per cent. In second place with 55 per cent were Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown.

Charity fundraiser - The Recreation Club, Mill Lane will stage a charity Country Classics evening on Saturday, June 30. The show will include solo tributes to country artists including Hank Williams, Tom McGraw, Willie Nelson, Don Williams, Charlie Rich and Vince Gill. Musical Memories - There will be a meeting of Musical Memories in the library on Monday, June 25 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends to sing some songs together and have a cup of tea. It is a community interest company and is a not-for-profit company. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person, which includes refreshments, is requested.

Fitness - The fitness classes organised by Wendy Harding are taking a break this week. They will resume on Monday, June 25. The last date for classes to be held this term are July 23, 24 and 25 with all classes resuming on Monday, September 10.

Draw - Pickering Town Football Club’s weekly draw last week for £825 was not won. The numbers were 8, 36 and 23. This week’s draw will be increased to £900.

ROSEDALE

Exhibition - Rosedale History Society, in conjunction with the Land of Iron Heritage Lottery funded project, is holding a social and industrial history exhibition in Rosedale Abbey village on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm with archive images and memorabilia. It will include a history treasure hunt with prizes. A Walk in the Land of Iron, Steam and Silence takes place on Sunday afternoon from the village as part of the Rosedale Walking Festival. RYEDALE

Show time - The Yorkshire Pelargonium and Geranium Society’s annual show will be held on Sunday at Hunmanby Community Hall, from noon until 4pm. It will include a new feature with past national champion, Ken Abel, conducting two masterclasses on showing and growing the plants. Admission to the show is £1 and this includes entry to the workshops which begin at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. There will also be plants for sale and refreshments will be available.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Derek Orwin. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, the door steward was Margaret Harris and the organist was Gay Lamb. Bible readings were given by Tina Greenley, who read from Jonah, and Denise Earnshaw, who read from Acts. In his address, Mr Orwin referred to the two bible readings in which Jonah gave God’s message to the people of Nineveh who repented and were given a second chance and Peter who thought that God’s love was only for Jews. The prayers of Intercession were read by Bert Blower. The service this week at 10.30am will be led by Laura McGarry.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and parish assistant Kieron Middleton preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion on Sunday. Kieron preached on the use by Jesus of parables to tell people about the kingdom of God. During the service, Kate Middleton, together with Rachel Watson, led the children’s activities and made Father’s Day cards. The children later distributed chocolates to all who were dads on Father’s Day and everyone who on the day remembered and gave thanks for dads who were no longer with us. Kieron also led the intercessions and together with Jim Baird assisted at the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Clare Firth served refreshments, and Janet Lamb and Dot Francis were the sidespersons. Kieron preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which he also led. Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Helen Swallow read. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

Fun day - The annual St Martin’s church fun day will be held in the church grounds on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. Among the attractions are craft and teddy stalls, a chocolate tombola, face painting, family games and refreshments. Entrance is free.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s - The Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate at the Holy Communion service at St Hilda’s on Sunday. The gardens at Jackson’s Wold will also be opened for charity on Sunday, when tea will be served by the women of the church. All proceeds will be donated by Mr and Mrs R Cundall to St Hilda’s.

Village show - Schedules are available for the show which will be held on Sunday, August 12 in the village hall from 1pm to 3.30pm. Entry is free. A raffle will be drawn at 3pm. There will be an after-show barbecue in the car park of the East Riding pub from 4pm onwards.

Messy Church - The next Messy Church session which will be held in the garden of Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street on Saturday, July 14.

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters N, P and U. As there was no winner the prize this week will be £460.

Community Club - This month’s live music night at the community & Sports Club will be on Saturday when Les Donkin will be performing from 9pm. Entry is free. The planned gin tasting evening has been postponed but a new date will be arranged.

Afternoon tea party - A total of £415 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care at the recent afternoon tea party.

Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess for the Big Brew event was Kim Canterbury. It promoted the work of Traidcraft and the Fairtrade organisation and included a Traidcraft stall. The Sunday service was led by the worship team. Sandra Cade led the opening praise and prayer time. Chris Cade read the lesson which were parables explaining what the kingdom of God was like. A game of Pointless was played to help discover more about kingdoms. The winners were Mary Dickinson and Luke Heron. After sharing the blessing and grace, coffee was enjoyed together in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Deacon Andrew Carter.

SNAINTON

Open gardens - The village’s open gardens event will be held on Sunday. Tickets and maps will be sold at the village hall from noon. There will be a cake stall, tombola and handicraft stall. Gardens will be open until 5pm. Lunches, snacks, sandwiches and afternoon teas will also be served in the village hall. There will be a plant stall at 12a Station Road. All proceeds from the event will help to boost St Stephen’s Church new roof appeal.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Smith and Bob Wardell won the meeting on Monday, June 11 with 68.5 per cent. In second place with 60.2 per cent were Isa Eggleston and Margaret Lowe.

WESTOW

Summer fair - The annual Westow Cricket Club summer fair is on Sunday between 10.30am and 1pm. There will be a variety of stalls both inside and outside the cricket pavilion. They include local handmade goods and cricket club stalls. Refreshments will also be on sale and there will also be a junior cricket match starting at 11am. The event is in aid of cricket club funds. Open house - Volunteers are opening the cricket pavilion every Saturday and Sunday between 10am until 1pm to raise money towards the running costs of the pavilion and cricket club. They will be providing tea, coffee and cold drinks, alongside home baking and bacon sandwiches. There is an opportunity to play pool, cards, dominoes and watch television.

WI REPORT

Middleton Aislaby and Wrelton - The June meeting was a talk by Tony Nicholson called the Secrets in his Attic. A chance discovery led to years of detective work to discover the history of a past resident of his house. This was the second talk on this subject and it is hoped he will return to give a third talk. The next meeting is on Wednesday, July 4 at 7.15pm in the village hall when Dr Chris Blackburn will talk about Mercy Hospital Ships. YCA REPORT

Rillington and District - The June meeting of the Rillington and District branch of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association held in the village hall was attended by 16 members and two prospective members. Steve Kirby, a grounds guide at Scampston Hall, gave a talk on the history of the hall, its grounds and garden. Valerie Gilbert, a volunteer at Scampston Conservatory, thanked Steve for his talk. He judged the competition for an artefact from the 1950s and awarded first prize to Lorna Mastaglio, who also sold the raffle tickets. Second was Babs Buckley and third Marjorie Grice. Reports were received on the North Riding meeting at Malton Rugby Union Club and Jack Berry House and the annual general meeting at Askham Bryan. The evening’s hostesses were Barbara Grice and Sue Mennell. Names were taken of the July visit to R V Roger in Pickering and menu choices for a meal at the Fleece Inn.
