RYEDALE residents are being reminded that they are responsible for their rubbish – even if someone else fly tips it illegally.

The message is part of the Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign.

Ryedale District Council’s Chairman of Policy and Resources, Cllr Luke Ives, said:“Many people are not aware that they remain responsible for ensuring their rubbish is disposed of properly. .

“If you do need someone else to take your rubbish away, it is easy to check the individual is legitimate – just ask to see their waste carriers licence and where they are taking the rubbish. Finally get a written receipt showing what has been collected and where the rubbish is going. If you don’t you are the one that could end up with a fine of up to £50,000 at magistrates’ court or an unlimited fine and possible prison sentence of up to five years at Crown Court.”
