SEVEN seal pups which were all rescued and rehabilitated by SEA LIFE Scarborough have been released back into the wild.

The seven pups – Cerus, Demeter, Hades, Leto, Persephone, Zeus and Atlas – were all rescued individually after obtaining various injuries caused by rough weather conditions and general illness, or being too young and underweight to survive.

After rescuing the seals, the animal care team at SEA LIFE Scarborough treated any health issues they had and cared for the seals in the dedicated seal rescue hospital.

Eventually, the pups were released to a local colony where they will have the best chance of survival.

Jordan Woodhead, aquarist who coordinated the release said: "We were really pleased with the swift recovery of all seven seals, however seeing the recovery of youngest seal, Zeus, was particularly rewarding.

"When he arrived at the centre he was extremely underweight and in need of treatment. We now think he has a great chance of survival out in the wild.”

SEA LIFE Scarborough has been rescuing and releasing seal pups for over 20 years and cares for over 30 pups on average every year.

Rob Barr, general manager of SEA LIFE Scarborough said: “All of us here are SEA LIFE are delighted that the pups can be released back into the wild.

"Our dedicated team in Scarborough do a sterling job at caring for every seal from the moment it arrives at the centre, and we are proud that we can give all the pups the best chance of survival.”
