A MALTON retro clothing shop has moved to a larger premises in the town.

Atom Retro, which first opened in the Market Place in 2014, recently moved to a unit in Newgate which was formerly Green’s Furniture Shop. It opened on Saturday.

The shop is the only bricks-and-mortar outlet of Scarborough-based Indie Apparel Ltd, and it has been trading online for nearly 15 years.

It specialises in retro, mod and indie clothing, with “an eye for 1960s clothing, 1970s clothing and a hint of vintage nostalgia”.

“We excited about it,” said Sarah Fenwick of the business. “The new premises just give us more space. There’s two shop floors to showcase our products.”

The business sells brands including Ben Sherman, Levi’s, Pretty Green and Dr Martens.

When it first opened, the owners said that they chose Malton because of its reputation for shopping, and Ms Fenwick said the store is going from strength to strength.

“It’s proved popular. We’re based in Scarborough so it’s convenient as well,” she said. “Malton is a friendly place - people like to come in again and again and have left great reviews.”

The company’s decision to expand to a larger store comes amid tricky conditions for clothing retail nationally.

Ms Fenwick said that’s based on the company’s online success. “Online we’re bucking the trend. We’ve got a global audience,” she said. “We work really hard to attract customers and we’ve got lots of really loyal ones.

“People from all over the world travel to the shop when they’re in the country.

“It’s a case of making sure we respond to what people are looking for.

“Retro clothing is huge at the moment, and we offer a lot of brands that people want.”

She added that the business also works with bands and musicians, as well as providing clothing for theatre and TV productions, and that it works with fashion bloggers around the world to get a global reach.

In addition to Atom Retro, the company also has its own fashion line - largely manufactured in England - called Madcap England. It’s named after the solo album The Madcap Laughs by Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, and creates 1960s and 1970s-inspired garments.
