A NUMBER of equine events are kicking-off the summer over the next few weeks.

First up is the Horse and Pony Fun Day, which will be held on Sunday at the Sports Field in Thornton-le-Dale. This popular event usually attracts more than100 competitors.

Organiser Rosie Garbutt said that this year they have a total of 35 showing classes - including two championships and a supreme championship - and also six showjumping classes from 45cm to 95cm.

“We aim to provide classes to suit all ages and all abilities,” she said.

On Wednesday, May 30, Middleton Hunt Pony Club will put on its junior/taster rally.

On Saturday, June 2, the sights and sounds of a traditional village show will be open to all when Acklam Sports and Gymkhana Show returns.

The show, which has been running for more than 100 years in the Ryedale village of Acklam, will feature a full day of equestrian events.

Gemma Thwaites, committee chairman, said: “This year’s gymkhana is gearing up to be one of the very best in our 100-year history. We have an action-packed schedule for show goers to enjoy and lots of competition in the equestrian classes.

“We hope as many people as possible will join us.”

It will take place at Kirk Balk Field, on Saturday, June 2. Equestrian events start at 9am with main ring attractions starting at 10.30am.
