AMOTHERBY

Foundation help - Amotherby Educational Foundation is a charity which provides benefits to Amotherby Community School. It also gives financial assistance to anyone under the age of 25 who are resident in the parishes of Appleton-le-Street, Easthorpe, Amotherby, Swinton and Broughton, towards their education or to prepare them for entry into a trade or profession. APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning and stalls in aid of chapel and church funds held in the village hall on Bank Holiday Monday had a record turnout and record total raised of £602.

Good service - Seven residents spent Saturday morning tidying a rather neglected tennis court at the playing field in preparation for relining.

Bach concert - Jamie Walton will be performing Bach Suites Nos 2, 3 and 4 in Christ Church at 3pm on Sunday, May 27. Tickets are £10 and available from 01751 417374. The event is in aid of the Water Works charity.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Heritage event - The village is holding a heritage weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23 in the village hall, whose committee is organising the event. Preparations and planning have begun and the organisers are keen for residents to part. It is planned to mount an exhibition in church and in the village hall and any offers of help would be appreciated. A number of old photographs of the village and scenes from village life have been donated by the Local History Society. Anyone with contributions and loaned artefacts would be welcome along with suggestions and offers of help. Parish council - The next ordinary and annual meeting will take place on Monday, May 21 at Sawdon Village Hall at 7pm.

Community lunch - The next Village Ventures Community lunch will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, May 23. Doors open at 12.15pm and lunch will be available from 12.30pm.

Church - It is hoped to follow the usual pattern of services at All Saints while the vicar is on sick leave. This means that this Sunday there will be a 9.30am communion service with coffee to follow. If this proves not to be possible, the wooden notice hanging on the board facing the road will be changed as soon as the churchwardens are informed.

Open gardens - The annual open gardens event is on Sunday, June 17, starting at the village hall where maps will be on sale between noon and 4pm. The gardens close at 5pm. There are already a good number of gardens on the map but new ones are always welcome. Phone Mary Jones on 01723 859437 if you have a garden to share for the event.

May market - The annual May Market will be held in the village hall on Saturday, May 26 from 10am until 1pm. It is a seasonal table top sale and coffee morning in aid of The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough. Entrance will be £1.50 to include refreshments. BULMER

Bridge Club - Winners of the meeting on Thursday, May 10 were Ian and Angela Barnett with 66.3 per cent. Second were Michael and Val Allen with 63.9 per cent.

FARNDALE

Reservoir talk - Twice in the 20th century Farndale was threatened by the creation of a reservoir up to 2.5 miles long and one-third of a mile wide, with the longest dam embankment in the country. A talk about it will be given by Bernie Eccleston in the Bandroom on Friday at 7.30pm. Entry is £5, including light refreshments.

Quiz - The general knowledge quiz held in the Feversham Arms Inn on Friday, May 11 raised £201 for St Catherine’s Hospice. Mick Stanley set the quiz which was hosted by Rachel Forster. Andy Fawbert sold raffle tickets.

GANTON

Group meeting - Malton Rural East Community and Police Consultation Group will be meeting in the village hall at 7pm on Wednesday, May 23. Group meetings are open to all members of the community to discuss local police related issues and to meet your local community and area police officers. It is an opportunity to air views and question local officers about crime issues and local road safety and representatives from highways, housing and other safety partners have been invited. Tea and coffee will be available on arrival.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Ladies Fellowship - There was a good attendance at the May meeting, including several visitors. Kathy Robson thanked everyone for their knitted squares and the stitching together of Lenten blankets is progressing. Several members contributed cakes to the library stall. Ann Gray and Kath Evans were celebrating birthdays this month. Margaret Gamble read two quotes from the Friends’ Advices and Queries asking whether we cherished our friendships and respected the wide diversity among us in our lives and relationships and remembered that each one of us is unique. Margaret ended with words by the native American Chief Seattle beginning All things share the same breath. Roger Burnett, community environment officer for Scarborough Borough Council, and Sheila Johnson, his assistant, gave a talk about Chelsea Flower Show. Roger is a Royal Horticultural Society judge involved in the show and Britain in Bloom. He and Sheila brought along some plants for sale in aid of Scarborough in Bloom. Tea and biscuits was provided by Ann Pennock and Joyce Wood. The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 13 at 7.30pm in the library when members will learn about the Ryedale Auctioneers. New members are always most welcome.

Cottage garden - Mick and Ann Potter’s garden at Penny Piece Cottage, 41-43 Piercy End, will be open on Sunday, May 27 from noon to 5pm as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Admission is £4 for adults and children free. For details, go to ngs.org.uk

Art exhibition - Maggie Roberts and David Shaw are staging an art exhibition entitled A Celebration of Nature at the Moorside Room, Church Street on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 1, 2 and 3 from 10am to 6pm. It includes diverse selection of original pictures, all for sale, from fine pencil studies and oil pastels to hand-embroidered collages and batik. Admission is free.

Tuesday Group - There is a change in the programme for the meeting in the Methodist School hall Jubilee Room at 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 22 when the speaker will be from The Rainbow Centre, Scarborough. Janet will be the leader and the tea hostesses are Janet and Dorothy.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive at Sturdy Court on Monday, May 21 at 7.30pm.

Cake stall - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie will hold a cake and produce stall at Towler’s Arch on Wednesday, May 23 from 8.30am. The group’s car boot sale at Welburn Manor will take place on Sunday, June 24.

Bridge club - North/South winners at the latest game were Clarissa Napier and Christine Brett with 56.6 per cent. Tim Johnson and Enid Watson were runners-up with 55 per cent. At East/West there were joint winners, Trevor and Gill tied with Bo and Tony Simpson with 56.6 per cent.

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church on Monday, May 21 from 4pm to 6pm in the Methodist Church. Accompanied children are welcome to join in activities and informal worship followed by a meal.

Open gardens - Kirkbymoorside In Bloom’s open gardens event is on Sunday, June 10, from 11am to 5pm. Tickets are £5 and include a cream tea which will be available on the day opposite Chisholm’s Monument. There will also be a plant stall. Book group - Kirkbymoorside Library Book Group will meet on Monday, May 14 and Monday, June 4 from 2pm to 3pm. The next books to be discussed are Autumn by Ali Smith and Camino Island by John Grisham. Live acts - Dave Lee Harper will provide the entertainment at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday at 8.30pm. The following Saturday, May 26, the performers will be Country Cousins, also starting at 8.30pm.

MALTON

NSPCC awards - Sue Swales, North East Yorkshire branch chairman, presented long service award certificates to four members of the Malton support group for the NSPCC. Kathleen Cuthbertson, Aileen Fisher, Cecily Knaggs and Joyce Low have all served for many years on the committee, raising thousands of pounds for the charity. Since moving to the Cresswell Arms for the chatty lunches in October 2013 the group has raised £3,583. The new season of lunches resumes on Wednesday, October 3.

Bridge club - The final session of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMP Pairs competition saw a big win for Anne Avery and Graeme Matthew with 63 points. In second place were David Crossland and Keith Freeman with 50 points followed by Beryl Bramall and Madeleine Webber with 18. Overall winners in the competition were Philip Mason and John Hayton ahead of Madge Allison and Richard Hilton with Mike and Annette Jackson in third place. The club now starts its summer sessions where no pre-arranged partner is needed. Last Thursday afternoon Tim Johnson and Enid Watson led the field with Joan Pickering and Anne Butterworth second.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Welcome Wednesday - There are meetings of Welcome Wednesday, organised by the charity Dementia Forward, every Wednesday in the village hall from 1pm to 3pm.

Parkinson’s support - The May meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group was held at Trinity Methodist Church, two new couples present. The speaker was Sandy from St Catherine’s Hospice who updated members on how the hospice can help Parkinson’s sufferers. Family cinema - The film Wonder was shown at the Methodist Church family cinema on Saturday. The next family cinema will be on Saturday, June 2 at 6.30pm when The Greatest Showman will be screened. Admission to the cinema is free, but donations are welcome. Doors open at 6pm. Snacks, ice cream and soft drinks will be for sale. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Bridge Club - The latest Butler score session was won by Dorothy Cordery and Sue Hardman with +59, in second place Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with +16 and in joint third with +1, Anthony and Moira Brown and Pat Hainsworth and Chris Brett.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, May 8 for lunch under the chairmanship of Anthony Brown. Karen Edmunds and Margaret Williams gave a talk on the organisation and work of the Samaritans. For membership inquiries, phone 01751 472879.

Fishkeepers - Owner Lynne and fish manager Mark hosted the May meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society at the Aquatic Finatic Aquatic and Pet Centre. Members were able to view a selection of coldwater and tropical freshwater fishes. The members took along various items of food for a shared supper and took part in a fun quiz which was devised by Paul Barrow. The next meeting of the society will be held on May 30 at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall at 7.30pm.

Plant stall - Members of Pickering and District Horticulture Society will be holding their annual plant stall in the Market Place on Saturday, May 26 from 8am onwards.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw for £450 was not won. The numbers were 12, 11 and 23. This week’s draw will be increased to £525. The May monthly consolation prize draw was also made at last week’s draw, there was no winner so the June consolation prize draw will be a rollover for £100, the May winning numbers were 11 and 12. Dusty tribute - The Kirk Theatre will host a Dusty Springfield tribute show with 60s Divas on May 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets are now on sale or at the door.

Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, May 14, from 11am to noon. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Seven teams playing for £56 took part in Jennie’s Mega quiz at the Fleece Inn. The winners were Team @ the Bar. The £14 jackpot was won by The Who. Jennie will be hosting a Mega Quiz in the Fleece on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 and includes cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and a hot supper.

Bingo - A prize bingo in aid of Malton Hospital will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, May 23. Doors open 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm.

SCAMPSTON

Country fair - The Yorkshire Game and County Fair, which also incorporates the UK Tractor Show, will be held at Scampston Hall on Saturday and Sunday. The show was formerly known as Pickering Game and Country Fair. It is open daily from 9am to 5pm with free car parking. Show attractions includes clay shooting, dogs display team, children’s entertainment, and vintage vehicles.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Communion. He used the gospel reading of the day to challenge the congregation about the choices that people are given in life. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion. Carole Beswick and Enid Plevey were sidespersons, and Clare Firth served refreshments. Lay preacher John Worthy led the 11am service of modern worship, and preached from John’s gospel chapter 15 about love, emphasising that the source of true love is God. He led the intercessions, Jean Fiedler read and Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson. The sung worship was led by John Grice, with Sue Grice and John Taylor. Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club, assisted by Iain Luke. Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Live music - Loose Covers will be performing at the Sports and Community Club on Saturday from 9pm.

Fun day - Ben Brewins and Ryan McDowell will be holding a summer fun day at the Sports and Community Club at 11am on Sunday, May 27. It is to raise funds for Ben’s Moroccan Atlas Mountain trek in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. He needs to raise money to cover costs of flights, trek guides, hotel and insurance before he even starts to collect sponsors so if anyone can help with raffle or tombola prizes get in touch. The event will include live music showcasing local talent, barbecue, bouncy castle, face-painting, a children’s cake-off competition, fully licenced bar and an appearance by Spiderman.

Gin show - Members and visitors will be able to taste a variety of gins at the Gin Show at the Sports and Community Club on Friday, June 8 to talk all things gin. Tickets for the event, which includes a talk by a gin specialist and five premium gins, accompanied by tonic and garnish, are £25. Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters R, U and X. As there was no winner, this week’s prize will be £225.

St Hilda’s Church - The choir Allerston Aloud, conducted by Janet Magee, performed a variety of numbers involving birds and animals, interspersed by some poems and an amusing monologue. Supper was served during the interval by the ladies of the church. Churchwarden Keith Usher introduced the choir and gave the vote of thanks, presenting the choir with chocolates and Janet with a plant. Sunday morning worship was led by Barbara Grice who took Leading Your Church Into Growth as her theme. Bill Hyndford supplied the music on his keyboard and the lesson was read by Carol Stephenson. Refreshments at the close were served by Chris Ashton and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, May 27 when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate. On that afternoon teas will be served at Jackson’s Wold, when the gardens will be opened to the public. All proceeds from the teas will be given to St Hilda’s Church by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall.

Methodists - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee continue to be given to the Air Ambulance. Messy Church met on Saturday and heard the story of how Jesus healed 10 people but only one said thank you. The children made a big art picture of things that people are thankful for. Sunday worship was the church anniversary celebrations which included Holy Communion. It was led by the Minister, Rev Dr Kevin Ridd, who found a thank you note and chocolate on the pulpit for him when he arrived. The welcomer was Jean Brown and the steward was Liz Aconley. Music and the opening worship was led by Chris Cade on the organ and Robin Magowan on guitar. Jean Brown read the lesson. Rev Ridd said that although thanks are given for the church building and what it means to us, people must remember that the church is the body of worshipping people. Kim Canterbury assisted with the Communion and after the blessing lunch, prepared by Sandra Cade, was enjoyed together. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be an All Age Pentecost Praise and will be followed by a bring and share lunch.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - Jill Smith from Binnington Blooms spoke about the many varieties of flowers she grows and supplies locally from her farm at the meeting on Tuesday, May 8. On Tuesday, June 12 the group are having an outing to Leyburn and Tenants Auctioneers. The next meeting will be held at the Methodist Chapel at 7.15pm on Tuesday, July 10.

WESTOW

Summer fair - There will be a summer fair at the cricket ground between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Sunday, June 24. Stalls are £5, payable in advance. Craft, homemade produce and charity stalls are welcome.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive on Saturday, May 26 at 7.30pm to raise funds for the hall. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

WI REPORTS

Thornton-le-Dale - The president, Margaret Smith, welcomed members to the May meeting. Birthday cards were presented to Carol, Lesley, Margaret and Margaret. Thanks were given to everyone who had donated items for the tombola, baked cakes, and helped man the stall on Saturday, May 5 when the Tour de Yorkshire passed through. A vote was taken for the annual meeting resolution, Mental Health Matters. After listening to information regarding the issue, and hearing personal points of view, members voted almost unanimously in favour of the resolution. Four members, Ruth, Ann, Lesley and Yvonne will represent the branch at the Federation Quiz. Margaret and Karen from Samaritans were the speakers and drew several questions from members about the organisation. Refreshments were served by Florence and Wendy. During social time, Ruth gave a report of the Spring Council meeting. Eleven members will be attending the Anglo-Indian lunch at Ebberston on Thursday, May 24. The branch has also been invited to celebrate Snainton WI’s 100th anniversary at an afternoon tea in July. Names will be taken in June. There will be no formal meeting in June, as there will be an outing to Scarborough Spa instead. Guests from other local WIs will be invited to the meeting in July when Dr Kate Giles will talk about the medieval wall paintings in Pickering Church. Members agreed to participate in the Co-operative entry for Ryedale Show.

Snainton - President Angela Howgate welcomed 47 members to the meeting on Tuesday, May 1. Jerusalem was sung, accompanied by Heather Harris on the piano. This year’s resolution is about mental health and Wendy Craig Tyler opened up the discussion in a thought-provoking way. The speaker for the evening came from Scarborough GCHQ. The talk was organised to precede a trip there. Other trips are also being organised but the main one is the afternoon tea at Hackness Grange on Thursday, July 12 to celebrate the centenary of Snainton WI. The competition for wartime memorabilia was won by Winifred Hetzel, second was Anne Pilgrim Green and third Sylvia Middleton.

YCA REPORT

Rillington - The May meeting was held in the village hall and was attended by 16 members and one prospective member. The scheduled speaker was unable to attend due to illness but Ruth Russell stood in at the last minute. Ruth from Settrington, gave a talk on her life in farming. Mollie Tindall gave the vote of thanks. Ruth judged the competition for a makeup case and awarded first prize to Barbara Grice. Second was Janet Hopper and third Jenny Ireland. Sheila Meadley has been booked for a cookery demonstration in March 2019, one of her last demonstrations before she retires. The proposal by central office to adopt a new name for the association to give it a new image was rejected by members who believe there is nothing wrong with the current name. Transport was arranged for the North Riding spring meeting at Malton Rugby Club and Jack Berry House. Some members attended the Scarborough area lunch at the Downe Arms, Wykeham. Lorna Mastaglio sold tickets for the raffle. The evening’s hostesses were Carol Stephenson and Chris Ashton. At the close of the meeting, Valerie and Lorna displayed the exhibit created by members for the annual YCA craft competition held at Wetherby, at which they were awarded third prize out of 13 entries. The exhibit, based on a Brambly Hedge book, contained many different handicraft skills, plus cookery and cake icing. Steve Kirby will give a talk on Scampston Hall at the June
