APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History walk - A five-mile guided history walk which was part of the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Breath of Fresh Air programme was undertaken by eight people. The walk was led by Jim Hall and supported by John Roberts. Tea and cakes, provided by Shirley Brooke, Margareth, Ivy and Joyce, were enjoyed after the walk in the village hall.

Fracking - A short update was given by Janet Isherwood on the latest fracking news at the annual parish meeting in the village hall which was attended by all councillors. Jules Golding updated the council on the progress made towards renovating the playing field. A planning application for Boxtree House has been received. It agreed that a recipient for the annual charity money award will be Geoff Wilson. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 5.

AYTON

Memories on record - Ayton Jubilee committee is inviting people from the area to share their memories from the past in the back room at the village hall on Sunday, May 20 from 2pm to 5pm so they can be preserved for the future. Many people have favourite stories they love to tell about events. Sometimes they are stories that were passed on by family or friends. Anyone attending can sit on their own and record their experiences or can sit with a member of the committee and relate stories to them. The recording machine will make sure that the experiences will go down in history. There will be an exhibition in the main hall linked to the history week events in the Bridge Library at West Ayton. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Matins at 11am taken by Dr Don Jones. The vicar is on sick leave and in his absence the churchwardens Dr Jones, phone 01723 859437, and Mark Evans phone 01723 859233 will help.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon club - The meeting at The Pheasant Hotel, Harome, on May 2 was attended by 38 members. Judith Godfrey gave an illustrated talk called My Experiences in Uruguay and Peru, dressed in traditional costume. She spent many years living and helping the people who lived away from the cities. Judith brought many embroidered items that had been made by the people which were available to buy. The next meeting is the annual meeting on June 6. Phone the club on 01439 770010.

HOVINGHAM

Market - The monthly village market on Saturday had a great turnout of people despite the road closures due to Tour de Yorkshire. The 60-plus stalls all did well and the buy-a-minute for the village clock raised £163. The next market will be on Saturday, June 2.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive last Thursday for a talk called My People by Mike Kipling, a much-published photographer from Guisborough. His photographs of people were mainly taken with their permission, and showing the environment they were taken in. The club’s next meeting is the annual general meeting and the best of the year digital image competition.

Bridge club - At the latest game, North/South winners were Enid Watson and Tim Johnson with 60 per cent. Barry Smith and Bob Wardell were runners-up on 53 per cent. Mary Mortenson and Anne Avery made it back to back wins for top East/West with a score of 62 per cent. Christine Roberts Holland and Bryan Wilson were second with 60 per cent.

Menzown - Edward Harrison will talk about recent additions to Ryedale Folk Museum’s Harrison Collection at the meeting in the King’s Head dining room on Monday, May 14 from 7.30pm. New members are welcome, just turn up for free.

Repair café - Kirkbymoorside Environmental Group’s next repair café will be held on Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm in the Moorside Room, Church Street. People are invited to take items that need repairing and volunteers will do their best to mend them, free of charge. Items can include computers, electrical and any household or garden items, bikes, toys, clothing mending and alterations. Refreshments will be available. Any proceeds will go to local organisations. Environment Group - The group is looking for someone with a van or trailer who would be willing to help people on Give or Take days who would like to take, or give, large items, such as sofas, beds or wardrobes. The team are happy to help with lifting, but have no suitable vehicle. It would involve being available for one Sunday morning twice a year. The next Give or Take day will be on Sunday, October 28 from 9am to noon.

Messy Church - The next session of Messy Church will be held on Monday, May 21 from 4pm to 6pm in the Methodist Church. Accompanied children are welcome to join in activities and informal worship followed by a meal.

Open gardens - There will be an open gardens event organised by Kirkby In Bloom on Sunday, June 10 from 11am to 5pm. Tickets costing £5, including cream tea, will be available on the day opposite Chisholm’s Monument in the town centre. There will also be a plant stall. Book group - Kirkbymoorside Library Book Group will meet on Monday, May 14 and Monday, June 4 from 2pm to 3pm. The next books to be discussed are Autumn by Ali Smith and Camino Island by John Grisham. KIRKDALE

Lecture - The Kirkdale Lecture will be given at 2.30pm on Saturday when Dr Philip Moore, formerly organist and director of music at York Minster, will speak on The History of Church Music.

LASTINGHAM

Concerts - There will be two concerts in St Mary’s Church this month. York City Gospel choir will be performing on Saturday. Soloists from Opera North will be singing operatic favourites on Friday, May 25, on the theme of A Woman’s Life and Loves. LEAVENING

Garage sale - Residents will be holding a garage sale on Sunday, June 10 from 10am to 1pm to help raise money for the play area maintenance fund. Refreshments will be served in the Methodist Schoolroom on the High Street and maps of the village will also be available.

Village fete - The annual village fete will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, July 8.

MALTON

Bridge club - Ed Robinson and Dave Massey won the final session of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs with 60.5 per cent. Second were Jonathan Allison and Graham Burgess with 56.1 per cent while Sheila Johnson and Gill Oxendale were third with 54 per cent. The overall winners were Richard Hazlerigg and Bryan Hone with Mike Jackson and Rob Ashdown in second place ahead of Philip Mason and Richard Hilton. On Thursday afternoon the winners were Tim Johnson and Enid Watson in the North-South seats and Audrey Shaw and Philip Mason at East-West.

MIDDLETON

Welcome Wednesday - There are meetings of Welcome Wednesday, organised by the charity Dementia Forward, every Wednesday in the village hall from 1pm to 3pm.

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers in the village hall on Saturday, May 19 from 10am to 3pm.

Bridge club - The latest session was won by Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with +55. In second place were Jean Wardman and Joan Taylor with +23 and third with +18 were Stan Bough and Graham Burgess. The results from the previous week were, first Joan Taylor and Jean Wardman with +28, second George Goodall and Anne Avery with +15, and third Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with +14. Next week is the third session of the Butler scored pairs competition.

Plant sale - The Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will hold its annual plant sale and coffee morning at the RVS Centre, Hungate, on Saturday at 9.30am.

Me And My Girl - Tickets are on sale for the Pickering Musical Society’s production of Me And My Girl at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate from Tuesday, May 15 to Saturday, May 19 at 7.30pm each evening. Tickets can be bought from the box office, via kirktheatre.co.uk or by phoning 01751 474833.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society held its annual aquarium open show at Kirby Misperton Village Hall. There were 22 exhibitors from 12 aquarist societies who brought along a total of 166 exhibits. The Nelson family of Ashby Fishkeepers won the best in show award with a Lombardol Cichlid and the best goldfish award with a common goldfish. The best exhibit award was won by Anthony Fisher of Bradford AS with a pair of Harlequin Rasbora. The auction of fishkeeping items consisted of 17 lots. The next meeting of the society will be held at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, May 30.

Plant stall - Members of Pickering and District Horticulture Society will be holding their annual plant stall in the Market Place on Saturday, May 26 from 8am onwards.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw for £300 was not won. The numbers were 23, 9 and 36. This week’s draw will be increased to £450. To enter the draw costs £1 per week per entry. To join see any Pikes committee member or call at Dunning Butchers Shop, Bridge Street.

Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, May 14 from 11am to noon. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

RILLINGTON

Art exhibition - The third annual Buckrose Community Café art and handicrafts exhibition will be held in the church rooms and village hall between 10am and 5.30pm on Saturday. Admission is free but donations would be welcome. Refreshments will be available in the church rooms.

Bridge - The results of the Bullet Bridge Club competition held on Thursday, May 3 were, first Ian and Angela Barnett with 65.1 per cent and second Peter and Sandy Hill with 62.5 per cent.

SCAMPSTON

Country fair - The Yorkshire Game and County Fair, which also incorporates the UK Tractor Show, will be held at Scampston Hall on Saturday and Sunday May 19 and 20. The show was formerly known as Pickering Game and Country Fair. It is open daily from 9am until 5pm with free car parking. Show attractions includes clay shooting, gun dog scurry, K92000 Dogs Display team, dog agility course, fly casting by Hywell Morgan, Ridgeside Falconry, lurcher show and racing, terrier show and racing, ferret show and racing, children’s entertainment, arena displays, old time fair, rural craft marquee, trade stands, vintage vehicles, reptile display, vehicle dealers, tractor pulling, archery and vintage tractors.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by the Rev Nigel Spencer. The organist was Doreen Lawson and the vestry steward was Bob Jackman. The door steward was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Margaret Harris, who read from Acts, and Bob Jackman, who read from John’s Gospel. In his sermon Rev Spencer spoke of how people are all different in so many ways. In colour, race, religion, the things we like the things we don’t like, the way we act. He went on to say that although we are different we should follow the commandment Jesus gave us Love one Another. The preacher this week at 10.30am is the Rev Martin Calver. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Communion. He used the gospel reading of the day to challenge the congregation about the choices that we are given in life. The reading told of the choice Jesus gives the disciples, that if they accept his commandments to love God and one’s neighbour then the love of God will grow in their lives. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion. Carole Beswick and Enid Plevey were sidespersons, and Clare Firth served refreshments. Lay preacher John Worthy led the 11am service of modern worship and preached from John’s gospel chapter 15 about love. John led the intercessions, Jean Fiedler read and Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson. The sung worship was led by John Grice, with Sue Grice and John Taylor. Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club, assisted by Iain Luke. Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies Group - John Porter from the Scarborough Lifeboat was the speaker at the Ladies Group meeting last Thursday. He talked about the various lifeboats at Scarborough where the latest one, built at the RNLI station at Poole, Dorset, was put into service 2017. Lots of people leave legacies to RNLI and some have had boats named after them. Tea was served at the close by Ella and Isabel. The next event is the annual service which will be held at Wilton Church on Sunday at 6.30pm. The next monthly meeting is on Thursday, June 7 at 2pm in the Methodist Schoolroom when Mrs M Shaw and friends will hold a session of Call My Bluff.

WOMBLETON

AGM - The annual general meeting of the village hall is on Thursday, May 10 in the hall at 7.30pm.

Village walk - The village walk will be held on Wednesday, May 16, meeting at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

WI REPORTS

Appleton-le-Moors - Mrs Humphreys presided at the April meeting when a new member was welcomed. Jeff Andrews was the guest speaker and told tales and stories from his younger years delivering milk to his later years as a removal man. The May meeting sees the branch welcome local singer and songwriter David Swann.

Malton - The meeting opened by the president, Sharon Cawte. Visitors were welcomed along with the official introduction of new group secretary Laura Edwards. Louise Bulmer, who stood down at the previous meeting, was presented with a card and a bottle of fizz as a thank you for her work as secretary. She will be staying on as an active member of the group. The recent fashion show raised more than £400 which was split equally between Malton WI and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Members were reminded of the upcoming cider mill trip and also given an update regarding the branch’s involvement with Malton In Bloom. The raffle theme was memories. Sarah from the Woodhams Stone Collection in Malton was the guest speaker and brought with her several albums of old local photographs and postcards of to browse. Refreshments were presented by Danielle Collins and Nicola Gaze. The next meeting is on Thursday, May 24 at 7.30pm in the Reading Rooms of St Leonard’s Church. OBITUARY

Alan James Kerridge - A service in loving memory of Alan James Kerridge was held at St Mary’s Church, Sand Hutton, followed by interment in the churchyard. The service was conducted by Sister Margaret Ann. Donations in lieu of flowers were for St Mary’s Church fund. Alan was born at Sinkinson House Farm, Sand Hutton, on May 6, 1932, and was one of two children. Edith, his little sister, died a number of years ago. In 1958 Alan met his late wife Dot and they were married at St Hildreth’s Church,York and they went on to have three children, Andrew, Jacky and James. Alan took over the running of the farm from his father, farming the land and rearing pigs and sheep. In 1973 he took over the tenancy of Woodhouse Farm with mainly arable farming and beef cattle. He had a great interest in vintage tractors and showed them at events in the county. Giving up the farm in 1979, the Kerridges moved to Mill House in Buttercrambe. Alan was one of the organisers who ran a successful youth club at Sand Hutton. He also became a special in the police working alongside John Wakefield. For many years he acted as a pallbearer for funeral director Bryan Mills. One of Alan’s great interests was gardening, particularly growing roses, which he showed at local village shows. He was also a judge at local shows and will be remembered for auctioning off the exhibits. Alan and Dot owned a caravan, loved dancing and he played bowls at Sand Hutton. Dot died in 2003. Later, Alan became friends with Chris and they moved to York where he took an interest in all the city’s churches and started to write his own life story. Alan’s health started to fail and he went to St Catherine’s care home at Shipton-by-Beningbrough, where he died on April 24. The family paid tribute to the staff at St Catherine’s for their care and attention.
