Cream tea and flowers - Cream tea will be served at Sycamore House between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday. There will also be a flower display and music in the Church of St John The Baptist.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning in aid of chapel and church funds will be held in the village hall on Monday, May 7 from 10am to 11.30am. Stalls include books, bric-a-brac, cakes, produce and there will also be a raffle.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood was held on Saturday. Five villagers collected wood and burned brash. The next work task will be on Saturday, May 26 at 10am.

Christ Church - The first of the There But Not There figures commemorating the fallen of the First World War has been placed on a pew in the church. A further five figures will be in place by Monday, October 1. The Milestone family, the Moors Inn, the History Group and the Village Hall have sponsored individual figures. The Reading Room, local WI, the church, chapel and individuals in the community have sponsored two other figures.

AYTON

Memories on record - Ayton Jubilee committee is inviting people from the area to share their memories from the past in the back room at the village hall on Sunday, May 20 from 2pm to 5pm so they can be preserved for the future. Many people have favourite stories they love to tell about events. Sometimes they are stories that were passed on by family or friends. Anyone attending can sit on their own and record their experiences or can sit with a member of the committee and relate stories to them. The recording machine will make sure that the experiences will go down in history. There will be an exhibition in the main hall linked to the history week events in the Bridge Library at West Ayton. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Gardening Club - Jonathan Hill gave a talk to Brompton and District Gardening Club last Wednesday called Lawns - Who Needs Them? John Evans reported that the annual plant sale on Easter Monday had made about £400. The next meeting will be on May 30 when Paul Robinson will speak on Diseases, Pests and Poisonous Plants.

May fair - The annual May market, a seasonal table top sale, will take place in the village hall on Saturday, May 26 from 10am until 1pm. Tables can be rented for £5 from Di Ford, phone 01723 859211. Proceeds will be in aid of the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough.

Church - There will be an 11am Communion service at the church on Sunday.

Community lunch - The monthly Village Ventures community lunch will be held on May 23 at 12.30pm and not the usual third Wednesday. The change has been made to enable the village primary school to use the hall for the national SAT tests.

EBBERSTON

Tidying up - Twenty-one volunteers helped with the village tidy day on Saturday, April 14. They concentrated mainly on the roadside verges along the A170 Tour de Yorkshire route and the B1258 Snainton to Yedingham road. More than 30 large bags of rubbish were collected, mainly food and drink containers that had been tossed aside. In addition to the litter pick, the group also spruced up the Jubilee garden and the Jubilee bench was relocated.

FARNDALE

Quiz - There will be a general knowledge quiz in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice in the Feversham Arms Inn on May 11 at 8pm. It is for teams of a maximum of four with entry £2 per person. The evening will include a supper and a raffle. The question master will be Mick Stanley.

HOVINGHAM

Market - There will be more than 50 stalls at monthly village market on Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. It will include a new stall, Grassfruits Farm from Acklam, which has ecologically sustainable organic chicken and produce. Community stalls include Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and North Yorkshire Rotters composting group. The café will be run by the Scackleton Action Group. The volunteer market manager is Graham Mason and Josh, the resident busker will be performing.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a family quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn, on Sunday at 8.30pm. Entry is £2, including a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

AGM - The Memorial Hall’s annual general meeting will be held at 7pm on Monday, May 14 in The Dugout.

Coffee morning - The All Saints monthly coffee morning will be held in church on Saturday from 9.30am to noon.

Menzown - Edward Harrison will speak on the recent additions to the Harrison collection at Ryedale Folk Museum at the meeting in the King’s Head Hotel on Monday, May 14, 7pm for 7.30pm.

Repair café - Kirkbymoorside Environmental Group’s next repair café will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 9.30am to 12.30pm in the Moorside Room, Church Street. People are invited to take items that need repairing and volunteers will do their best to mend them, free of charge. Items can include computers, electrical and any household or garden items, bikes, toys, clothing mending and alterations. Refreshments will be available. Any proceeds will go to local organisations. Domino drive - There will be a domino drive at Sturdy Court centre on Monday, May 7 at 7.30pm.

Bridge club - Mary Mortenson and Anne Avery won North/South with 61 per cent at the latest meeting. Lesley and Tim Vesey made 54 per cent for second. Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale topped East/West with 64 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson were runners-up with 57 per cent. Play of the week went to Eileen and Frank Hayward.

Sponsored knit - The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will holding a sponsored knit at Manor Close centre on Wednesday, May 9 from 2pm to 4pm. All knitters should take a pair size 8 needles and DK wool. The aim is to eventually have scarves for the shoebox appeal.

Messy Church - The next session of Messy Church will be held on Monday, May 21 from 4pm to 6pm in the Methodist Church. Accompanied children are welcome to join in activities and informal worship followed by a meal.

Ladies Fellowship - A representative from Scarborough Borough Council will talk about the council’s exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show at the Fellowship’s next meeting on Wednesday, May 9 at 7.30pm in the library. There will be an opportunity to buy plants.

Open gardens - There will be an open gardens event organised by Kirkby In Bloom on Sunday, June 10 from 11am to 5pm. Tickets costing £5, including cream tea, will be available on the day opposite Chisholm’s Monument in the town centre. There will also be a plant stall. LASTINGHAM

Concerts - There will be two concerts in St Mary’s Church this month. York City Gospel choir will be performing on Saturday, May 12. Soloists from Opera North will be singing operatic favourites on Friday, May 25, on the theme of A Woman’s Life And Loves. Both concerts start at 7.30pm. Gardening Club - The April meeting was opened by chairman Bill Tweedle. Michael Myers gave a talk called Scent and Scentability which included recommendations of scented plants and ideal planting positions. Members were invited to smell examples of some of the plants from his garden. The hostesses were Ann Mansfield and Ann Mulholland. The next meeting is on Tuesday, May 8 at 7.30pm in Marton Village Hall when Paul Robinson will talk about pests and diseases. Admission on the door is £2 and include entry into the raffle and refreshments.

NAWTON

Bingo - Committee members of the recreation ground will hold a prize bingo to raise money for the refurbishment of the recreation ground and play area in the village hall on Saturday, May 5 at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Willow weaving - There will be a willow weaving workshop in the village hall from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, May 13. The cost is £35, which includes materials. PICKERING

Wedding festival - A display of wedding memorabilia, mainly from couples who were married at Pickering Methodist Church, will be held this weekend. The event will start on the Friday at 7pm when the church will be open so the displays can be viewed. Light refreshments will be served in the hall. There will a picture quiz called Guess the Bride. Mary Bradford and Martin Redgard will be singing. The festival will be open from 10am until 6pm on the Saturday with tea and coffee served in the hall until 3pm. There will be organ recitals at intervals during the day and DVDs of weddings that took place in the church will also be shown. Afternoon tea will be served from 4.30pm. This will be a ticket-only event. Tickets are £6 and are available from Fiona Scaling, phone 01751 477731. The Rev Ruth Duck will take the morning service on Sunday at 10.30am with the theme of Love. This will include Holy Communion. A further short service will be held at 3pm and will give the opportunity for the renewal of wedding vows. Plant sale - The Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will hold its annual plant sale and coffee morning at the RVS Centre, Hungate, on May 12 at 9.30am.

Super draw - There was no winner of last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw. The numbers were 1, 17 and 36. This week’s draw will be increased to £375. Bingo - A prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £380 for All Saints Church, Thorpe Bassett. Donations of £80 brought the total up to £460. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker was Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo in the centre will be held on Wednesday, May 23 and is in aid of Malton Hospital.

Art deadline - Friday is the last day for the submission of entry forms for the Buckrose Community Café art and handicrafts exhibition to be held in the church rooms and village hall on Saturday, May 12. Entry forms are available from the Buckrose Café in the Church Rooms and the Post Office.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting her mega quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 and includes cash prizes, cash jackpot and hot supper. Jennie’s Sunday night quiz was won by Gary’s Team.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and reader Judith Dean assisted at the Together Service, held when there is a fifth Sunday in the month, for the churches in the joint benefice of Seamer, East Ayton and Cayton. Ian Popely, the area speaker for the Christian Charity Tearfund, the Evangelical Alliance relief fund, spoke at the service and led the prayers. Ian talked about the work of the charity in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Readers Judith Dean and Elizabeth Moreland assisted with the distribution of communion, and Edna Burton and the St Martin’s worship band led the sung worship. Brenda and Esme both read passages from the Bible, Julie and Hazel were sidespersons and Andrew and Elizabeth served refreshments.

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Dr Rev Kevin Ridd. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward Bob Jackman, welcomer Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Jan Blower and Michael King. The theme of Kevin’s sermon was God is love. During the service Holy Communion was observed. The service next week at 10.30am will be taken by Rev Nigel Spencer. The concert last night was well attended and Village Voices gave an excellent performance which was enjoyed by everyone.

SHERBURN

Fun day - Ben Brewins and Ryan McDowell will be holding a summer fun day at the Sports & Community Club on Sunday, May 27. It is to raise funds for Ben’s Moroccan Atlas Mountain trek in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. He needs to raise money to cover costs of flights, trek guides, hotel and insurance before he even starts to collect sponsors so if anyone can help with raffle or tombola prizes please get in touch.

Gin show - Members and visitors will be able to taste a variety of gins at the Gin Show at the Sports & Community Club on Friday, June 8 to talk all things gin. Tickets for the event, which includes a talk by a gin specialist and five premium gins,

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters B, H and V. As there was no winner, this week’s prize will be £135.

Open gardens - Jackson Wold Garden will be open as part of the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday, May 27. Proceeds from the teas will be given to St Hilda’s Church.

On song - Allerston Aloud will be performing at St Hilda’s Church on Friday, May 11 at 7pm. Admission is £5 payable on the door. There will be light refreshments.

Community Café - The café is open in the village hall each Thursday between 9am and11.30am with proceeds going to village hall funds. There are play facilities for children.

Methodists - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston and donations for coffee continue to be given to the Air Ambulance. The Sunday service was led by Michael Earnshaw and steward Liz Aconley operated the audio-visual equipment. The guitarist was Robin Magowan and the welcomer was Kim Canterbury. who also read a lesson. The other lesson was read by Samantha Magowan. Refreshments were enjoyed in the hall afterwards.The service this Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Janette Biltcliffe. At about 2.30pm the chapel will be welcoming the pilgrimage walkers from Filey who will be stopping to pray.

SNAINTON

Revolting Women - The Mikron Theatre will be staging a production of Revolting Women, which celebrates the Suffragette movement’s centenary, in the village hall on Tuesday, May 29. Tickets are on sale now at £13 each from Jill Allen, phone 01723 859235.

Cabaret - Stamford Bridge Singers will be performing a May Day Cabaret in the village hall on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7, starting at 6.30pm. Jumble sale - Proceeds from a jumble sale and cake sale in the village hall on Saturday, May 12 from 1pm to 2.30pm will be divided between village organisations. Clothes collection - The cricket club’s blue bag collection on Saturday, April 21, raised £102. The next collection will be later in the year, possibly in November.

Plant stall - The annual play area plant stall is on Sunday starting at 10am. Tea, coffee and home baking will also be available. Donations of plants can be taken on the day. Money raised from the stall, drinks and cake is for the upkeep of the play area.

WOMBLETON

AGM - The annual general meeting of the village hall is on Thursday, May 10 in the hall at 7.30pm.

Village walk - The village walk will be held on Wednesday, May 16, meeting at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

WI REPORTS

Helmsley - The branch of held its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 26 in the hall of the Methodist Church when the president, Val Arnold, welcomed 16 members and one new member. After the minutes were read and notices given she introduced, Barbara Capaldi who gave a presentation about ACWW. Associated Country Women of the World is an international organisation whose aim is to raise the standard of living for rural women and their families. Money is raised at WI meetings through donations to Pennies for Friendship boxes. Chris Small thanked Mrs Capaldi for her talk which generated much discussion. The competition for a souvenir was won by Moira Wood with Hazel Dunn and Mavis Holmes second and third. At the next meeting, on Thursday, May 24 at the North York Moors National Park headquarters in Bondgate, Shirley Smith will give an illustrated talk about the Stamford Bridge Tapestry.

Kirkbymoorside - Sheila Johnson and Roger Burnett gave an illustrated talk at the March meeting on how the new Chatsworth Flower Show is prepared and the criteria for entry and judging. They had brought spring bulbs and handmade cards for sale. The April meeting was about the Cleveland Hellfire Club with Tony Nicholson paying his fourth visit to the branch and spoke about his historical and social detective work. His book, The Love of Dangerous Men, is now on sale. At both meetings birthday girls received posies made by Jan Tattersall. The speakers also judge the competitions, won in March by Elaine Gillson, Jan Tattersall and Alison Sigsworth and in April by Barbara Coram, Jane Jackson and Colleen Nicoll. Members also gathered at the bowling club for the fashion show by Sentier of Pickering and Champley Shoes. The compere was branch secretary, Carol Smith. In the interval president Chris Martin officiated with the large raffle and a lucky number draw. Glasses of prosecco were enjoyed and after the show the clothes were for sale. The next meeting is at 7.15pm in the Methodist schoolroom when the branch will discuss and vote on the resolution Mental Health Matters. Sinnington - Tom Mutton from the North York Moors National Park Authority talked about the Exploited Land of Iron project at the March meeting. With diagrams, photographs and other visual aids, he explained that the project runs for three years and its purpose is to inform the public about the exploiting of resources and mining of iron from the North York Moors more than a century ago, the people who ran it and worked the mines, and the sites, mapping and infrastructure of the mines and railways that served it. He explained how volunteers are actively taking part in archaeological excavation. The next meeting will be in the village hall on Thursday, May 10, at 7.15pm when Richard Smith will talk about ceremonial trumpets.
