APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall - Two eight-seat picnic tables and a bench have been bought by the village hall committee and will be put in front of the hall. A new external light has been installed to illuminate the key pad of the defibrillation unit. Two new notices are to be displayed, one giving the free Wi-Fi password, the other to indicated the responsibilities of the hirer when leaving the premises. The village hall committee, which met last Wednesday, will sponsor one of the “therebutnotthere” figures to be installed in the church.

History walk - A five-mile guided history walk which is part of the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Breath of Fresh Air programme will start at the village hall at 1pm on May 6. Booking is essential via the NYMNP website.

Singalong - The next Singalong will be held in the village hall on May 2 at 6pm.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - There is no service at Brompton on Sunday but a Benefice Communion service will take place at Hutton Buscel at 10.30am.

May Fair - The annual May market, a seasonal table top sale, will take place in the village hall on Saturday, May 26, from 10am to 1pm. Tables can be rented for £5 from Di Ford, phone 01723 859211. Proceeds will be in aid of the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough.

HELMSLEY

Yorkshire Cancer Research -The Helmsley committee of Yorkshire Cancer Research raised £1,600 at a bridge lunch in Harome pavilion on Thursday, April 12. There will be a pop-up café to raise funds for the charity at the Riccall Dale bluebell walk on Sunday, May 20 from 10am. Hot bacon and sausage sandwiches, homemade cakes and hot and cold drinks will be available.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a family quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn, on May 6 at 8.30pm. Entry is £2, including a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown. Phone 01751 417343 for details.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The winners at the latest game were the two in-form partnerships of Gill and Trevor Hardcastle and Bo and Tony Simpson. The former won at North/South with 68 per cent, followed by Angela Smith and Pat Hainsworth on 54 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson won East/West with 70 per cent. Margaret Ross and Tom Morton were runners-up on 54 per cent. Play of the week went to Sue Pearson and Bob Price.

Book group - Kirkbymoorside Library Book Group will meet on Monday, May 14 and Monday, June 4 from 2pm to 3pm. The next books to be discussed are Autumn by Ali Smith and Camino Island by John Grisham. Club act - Live entertainment at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday will be provided by Brian Gibson, starting at 8.30pm.

Messy Church - The theme was Risen with Jesus at this month’s meeting of Messy Church. Activities included butterfly painting, daffodil making, a new take on snakes and ladders, the story of a butterfly and Christian living. Liz Bartrop led the informal worship, telling the story of the caterpillar. Joan Magson and Cathryn Nicholson prepared the shared meal. The next Messy Church is on Monday, May 21 from 4pm to 6pm in the Methodist Church.

Open gardens - There will be an open gardens event organised by Kirkby In Bloom on Sunday, June 10 from 11am to 5pm. Tickets costing £5, including cream tea, will be available on the day opposite Chisholm’s Monument in the town centre. There will also be a plant stall. If anyone is interested in opening their garden, phone 01751 430250. There will be a Kirkby In Bloom stall outside Sinh Ley Chinese takeaway at the town’s 10K event on Sunday, May 6 when people can find out more about open gardens day and the activities of the In Bloom group, which is always looking for new volunteers.

Camera Club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday at the Moorside Bar and Club in for a natural history and portraiture competition. The judge was Malcolm Blenkey from Saltburn. Bob Ordidge won with his print Juvenile Japanese Monkey in a Dither. The runner-up was Ian Leadley with his print Natural Symmetry. In the projected digital image competition, Martin Williams won with his image Living In The Past. Barn Owl Hunting, taken by Lynn Wraith was the runner-up. Mike Kipling will give a talk called My People at the club’s next meeting on Thursday, May 3.

LASTINGHAM

New vicar - Easter saw full churches at St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam. In both, the churchwarden read out a letter from the Bishop of Whitby before the service began which informed the congregations that the Rev Susan Binks, of Harome, has been appointed as the new vicar of Kirkdale, Harome, Nunnington and Pockley. Her official installation will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, June 3. Further details will be announced nearer the time.

Lecture - Dr Philip Moore, formerly organist and director of music at York Minster, will give the annual Kirkdale lecture at St Gregory’s Minster at 2.30pm on Saturday, May 12. The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster will have its annual general meeting in the church immediately before the lecture. Dr Moore will talk about the history of church music, illustrating his talk with recorded music and by playing the organ. Refreshments will be available afterwards in the Millennium Room at St Hilda’s, Beadlam. There is no charge for either the talk or the refreshments.

Services - There will be a choral evensong at St Gregory’s Minster on Sunday, May 6 at 6pm and a choral eucharist at 11am on Sunday, May 13. On Ascension Day, Thursday, May 17, there will be a choral eucharist at 7pm. On Sunday, May 20 there will be a choral eucharist at 11am and on Sunday, May 27 there will be Matins at 11am. There will be no morning service at St Gregory’s on Sunday, June 3.

LASTINGHAM

Concert - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will give a concert called Best of Brass at 7.30pm on Friday under the direction of Sarah Woodward. MALTON

Flower club - The April meeting of Malton and District Flower Club took the form of a practice class called Floral Fiver. Twenty-one members used a variety of flowers to create displays, which was judged by Joan Burney. The class winners were novice, Alice Thompson; intermediate, Annie McIntosh; lower advanced, Margaret Bell; advanced, Sandie Evans; gold advanced, Jillian Swiers. The Bobby Swanton Trophy for the best use of garden foliage was awarded to Pam Russell. The next meeting on Tuesday, May 15 is an open evening at Norton College when Sue Maddocks will present the Darling Buds of May. The cost is £10 and £5 for members. The annual outing on Tuesday, June 19 is to Primrose Bank, Kexby. The price of the trip is £18 and including transport, admission and tea. Visitors and new members are welcome. Bingo - Committee members of the recreation ground will hold a prize bingo to raise money for the refurbishment of the recreation ground and play area in the village hall on Saturday, May 5 at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE

Concert - Simple Harmony from Snape will be performing in the Methodist Chapel on Saturday at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be served at the close.

PICKERING

Wedding festival - A display of wedding memorabilia, mainly from couples who were married at Pickering Methodist Church, will be held on the weekend of May 4 to May 6. There will be wedding dresses, photo albums and other items on display in the church. The event will start on the Friday at 7pm when the church will be open so the displays can be viewed. Light refreshments, including fruit punch and nibbles will be served in the hall. There will a picture quiz called Guess the Bride. Mary Bradford and Martin Redgard will be singing a number of songs. The festival will be open from 10am until 6pm on the Saturday with tea and coffee served in the hall until 3pm. There will be organ recitals at intervals during the day and DVDs of weddings that took place in the church will also be shown. Afternoon tea will be served from 4.30pm. This will be a ticket-only event. Tickets are on sale for £6 and are available from Fiona Scaling, phone 01751 477731. The Rev Ruth Duck will take the morning service on Sunday at 10.30am with the theme of Love. This will include Holy Communion. A further short service will be held at 3pm and will give the opportunity for the renewal of wedding vows. The festival is open to all, not just those married at the Methodist Church.

Family cinema - An audience of parents and children of all ages enjoyed Paddington 2 at the recent family cinema at the Methodist Church. The next family cinema will be on Saturday, May 5 at 6.30pm when the film Wonder will be screened. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Doors open at 6pm. The tuck shop will also be open with snacks, ice cream and soft drinks also for sale during the interval. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Bridge club - The latest session was won by Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough with 65 per cent. In second place were Rob Ashdown and Madge Allison with 61.98 per cent and Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 56.25per cent finished third. Next week sees the start of the Butler Pairs competition.

Inn closed - Horseshoe Inn landlord Kevin Wilson finished as landlord on Monday, ending his long relationship with the pub. The Horseshoe Inn has now closed until further notice.

Plant sale - The Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will hold its annual plant sale and coffee morning at the RVS Centre, Hungate, on Saturday, May 12 starting at 9.30am.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society hold its annual open show will be held on Sunday at Kirby Misperton Village Hall from 10am.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday, May 12 at 7,30pm.

Me And My Girl - Tickets are on sale for the Pickering Musical Society’s production of Me And My Girl at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate from Tuesday, May 15 to Saturday, May 19 at 7.30pm each evening. Super draw - There was no winner of last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw. The numbers were 20, 19 and 13. This week’s draw will be increased to £300.

Quiz - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Domino final - Pickering Recreation Club A beat White Horse, Rosedale, 13-11 in the final of the Jack Gilbank Memorial Trophy at the Conservative Club last Wednesday.

RILLINGTON

Quiz time - Seven teams playing for £50 took part in Jennie’s mega quiz at the Fleece Inn. The winners with were Honeymooners, second were Team @ the Bar and third Mike, Fiona and Co. Jennie’s next mega quiz will be held on May 4. Col and Mike won the Sunday night quiz after a tie-break with Sue’s Crew.

On stage - Music duo Julia N Dave will be performing songs from the 60s to present day in the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was led by Amanda Clayton. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, the welcomer was Margaret Harris and the offering was taken by Margaret Neave. Michael Bull accompanied the singing on piano and organ. The theme of the service was Light. A sketch explaining how this light that comes from Jesus is free to everyone and was performed by Amanda and Allan. Bible readings were given by members of the church and the Singing for Fun group performed three songs. Amanda also sang a solo she had written herself called You Are The Light Of The World. During the service the congregation were invited to light a candle as a prayer for someone in need. The preacher this Sunday at 10.30am is Dr Rev Kevin Ridd and Holy Communion will be observed. Village Voices will be in concert on Saturday at 7.30pm. Admission £6 on the door and will include a light supper.

SHERBURN

Play project - The Community and Sports Club committee is considering moving the play equipment closer to the patio in front of the club so it is more sheltered from the elements It will also be an opportunity to improve the surface from grass to a coloured rubber safety floor and also to add an extra piece of equipment, possibly a small roundabout. The cost of this work is expected to be about £25,000 which would have to be raised through fundraising and grants. Before we decide to proceed the club needs to gauge the interest of parents in supporting the change by getting involved in raising the money to actually do the work. If there is enough support a sub-committee will be formed to manage the project. Anyone interested in being involved should leave a note addressed to the secretary in the club’s letterbox at the end of the clubhouse facing the car park. Quiz and bingo - There will be a quiz at the Community and Sports Club on Sunday at 8pm. It is for teams of up to five people. Entry is £1. A record £645 was paid out on the last club’s last bingo before the summer break. The next bingo will be on Saturday, September 15.

Letters draw - There was no winner of Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday. The letters were B, H and V. This week’s prize fund will be £90.

Luncheon club - Diane Robinson spoke about the work of the Saturday breakfast held at Westborough Methodist Church each Saturday. Kim Canterbury, one of the coffee morning hostesses, presented a cheque for £200 which had been donated at recent coffee mornings. The next Luncheon Club will be on Wednesday, May 16, meeting at 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport within Sherburn village can be arranged by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Confirmation - The Bishop of Selby, The Rt Rev Dr John Thomson, officiated at the confirmation service at St Hilda’s church when six candidates from throughout the Benefice were welcomed into full membership of the Church. The Bishop took The Lord is My Shepherd as the theme for his sermon. Keith Usher acted as chaplain to the Bishop. The Rev Joe Kinsella read the lesson from the Gospel and helped with the chalice along with Barbara Grice. The lesson from Acts was read by Rev Judy Duke. Sidespeople were Betty Flinton with Barbara Grice, assisted by Angela Holdsworth and Jean Usher. Music was supplied by Mike Dixon. Afterwards food was served in the village hall by Carol Stephenson, Christine Ashton, Pam Heath and Gill Thorpe Dexter. The Parochial Church Council thank everyone who contributed food donations. The next service at St Hilda’s will be morning worship led by Barbara Grice on Sunday, May 13 at 10.30am.

Methodists - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee are now to be given to the Air Ambulance. Kath Charter from Fylingthorpe to led the worship on Sunday and she took as her theme Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Opening worship was led by Chris Cade on the organ and Robin Magowan and Tom Webborn on guitars. Alex Magowan read the story of the Good Shepherd from John’s Gospel. Offertory stewards were Liz Aconley and Sandra Cade. The audio-visual equipment was operated by Christine Fenwick, assisted by Samantha Magowan. India and Kiara Heron showed the craftwork they had made during the service. After worship coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service this Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Michael Earnshaw

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Women’s prayer day - The postponed Women’s World Day of Prayer was held in the Old Grammar School, a change of date due to earlier bad weather. Mary Kemp was the leader. The readers were Sandra Lear, Joyce Helliwell, Val Payne, Jan Hargreaves, Philippa Preston, Barbara Parsons, Rachel Hill, Mary Hoggarth and Bet Vincer. Betty Walker was the pianist. The collection was taken by Margaret Hand and Joyce Nellis. The service was produced by the ladies of Suriname.

WEAVERTHORPE

YCA - A representative from the Norton-based Next Steps Well Being Centre will be the speaker at the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association meeting in the village hall on Tuesday, May 8 at 7.30pm. Entry to the talk for guests us £3. Next Steps supports local people with mental health problems and well-being issues by providing a drop-in centre, activities and outreach groups at Kirkbymoorside and Pickering and pop ups throughout Ryedale. Among the services it provides is a community café in Norton with a free computer suite available most days. Anyone wishing to join the Weaverthorpe branch of YCA at its monthly meetings should phone secretary Sue Thomson on 01944 738804 for a programme of events.

Jumble sale - Proceeds from a jumble sale and cake sale in the village hall on Saturday, May 10 from 1pm to 2.30pm will be divided between village organisations. Entry is £1 and includes refreshments. Children can go free. AGM – The village hall’s annual general meeting will be held in the hall on Thursday, May 10 at 7.30pm.

Village walk - The village walk will be held on Wednesday, May 16, meeting at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. More details will be announced shortly.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive on Saturday and on Wednesday, May 2 at 7.30pm in the village hall to raising funds for the hall. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea biscuits.

WI REPORTS

Thornton-le-Dale - The president, Margaret Smith, welcomed members and guests to the April meeting. Birthday cards were presented to Doris, Arline, Jane, Jane, Lesley and Pauline. Members were reminded to sign up for the June outing and any other WI events they wished to attend. The quiz team was finalised, and everyone was reminded about the tombola and cake stall to be held on Saturday, May 5. Jill Smith from Binnington Blooms spoke about how she set up her Flowers from the Farm business and showed us some of her flowers. She made three bunches of English flowers which were raffled at social time. Jill has a stall at Wykeham farmers’ market each week. Members were able to have a guess at the length of the knitted poppies which was won by Julie. Refreshments were served by Betty, Shirley and Wendy. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8, when a representative from the Samaritans will be the

speaker.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - June Gamble welcomed 22 members and one guest to the meeting in the village hall on Tuesday, April 17. The minutes of the March meeting were read and signed. Members were asked to complete data protection forms which will be held by the club, in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation which comes into force in May. The chairperson, treasurer and secretary’s forms are to be held at head office. Craig Farnon gave a talk called The Life of a Modern Day Butler. Mr Farnon, assisted by his son, works as a butler at Scampston Hall, where he has many tasks. He gave tips on setting a formal dinner table and on cleaning glassware and showed the many different brushes used to do a deep clean of the hall, explaining that each one was used for a specific purpose and on specific items of furniture and furnishings. Jan Andrews gave a vote of thanks and refreshments were served. Twenty members attended the Wombleton YCA’s lunch at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club on Thursday, March 22. The club thanked Carol Gamble for organising the event.
