A NORTON-based artist is sharing her talent for printing and painting at a one-day workshop next week.

Susan Slann lives and works from her studio in Langton Road.

She achieved a first class degree with the University of Hull and went on to study for her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Leeds and also obtained a teaching degree from the University of Huddersfield.

Her work is varied, and experimental and she is always striving to find new ways to express herself and the fundamental emotions we can all connect with.

Sue has recently been working on a series of paintings and prints based on a post office collection route from Malton to Ravenscar.

Sue said: “As a painter and printmaker, the physical process of transformation has always been a significant part of my practise. The physical properties of paint or materials used, and the way they adapt or change as the transformation takes place, creating a sense of spontaneous aesthetic balance.

“My practise has developed from a fascination for the relationship between paint or materials, and surface and how this interaction connects with our senses and emotions.

“Through the use of manufactured textured wallpaper, the work embraces the anti-aesthetic qualities of a functional surface which does not have any sense of ‘taste’ or comfort in historical fine art quality.

“It is a surface which cannot achieve the effect of oils on canvas and will always fail, and it is the idea of failing to recreate something from the past which I find interesting.”

Sue said she was currently focusing on her own work, which includes painting and printmaking, and was hoping to provide regular workshops and courses from her studio.

Her first one-day workshop will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 10am to 4pm, at St John’s House, 1 Langton Road, Norton.

Sue said: “The workshop is aimed at all abilities and if you have any ideas or designs you would like to work on then please bring them with you.”

The cost is £30 and includes materials and refreshments.
