HELMSLEY Archaeological and Historical Society’s next talk will be on Friday, at 7.30pm, at the North York Moors National Park offices in Helmsley.
Dr Sonia O’Connor, University of Bradford, will give a talk entitled, The York Helmet: biography of an iconic object.
Discovered in 1982 on the building site that was to become the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Coppergate helmet is still the best preserved Anglian helmet ever excavated.
Its conservation was a complex and painstaking process designed to uncover the surviving structure of the helmet and ensure its survival for the future, but it also revealed unexpected details that provided unprecedented insights into the helmet’s story.
All welcome.
