APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Waterworks Project - There will be a coffee morning in the village hall to launch the Waterworks Project at 10.30am on Saturday, April 14. It will be followed the same evening at 7.30pm with an African-themed dinner, priced at £10, also in the village hall.

Annual meeting - The annual general meeting of the Appleton & Spaunton Community Energy CIC was attended by its four directors and one members with apologies received from Geoff and Liz Sherwin. A total of 33 bags have been supplied to the community and another 22 have been processed. A small loss was made during the year although the company’s balance sheet remains healthy. Work tasks by volunteers had continued throughout the year and further felling is imminent.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Domino drive - The last domino drive of the winter season was played on Thursday, March 22. Prizes were organised by David and Elaine Mudd, who hosted the evening. First prize went to Chris Gibson with a score of 122. Dave Pennock followed with 116. The accumulator for top score over the season, was won by David Mudd with 524. Supper was prepared and served by Anne Tidd and Di Ford. The money raised on the evening was £192, taking the total for the whole season to £965.58 which will go towards the purchase of new chairs for the village hall. Anne and Di, representing the village hall committee, gave a vote of thanks to the drive’s regular attendees. David and Elaine were presented with flowers, wine and a box of chocolate quails eggs for Easter. A vote of thanks and flowers was also given to Kathleen Mudd who had baked cakes for the supper all through the season.

Village hall - There will be a coffee morning between 10am and 11.30am on Tuesday, April 10 in the village hall to raise awareness and funds ahead of the launch of Brompton Ducklings Toddler Group. The morning will include activities for children.

Church - All Saints Church was packed for the service on Easter Day which was taken by the vicar. As the church bells rang about 20 youngsters with parents went to the top of Castle Hill to roll their decorated eggs. Most had been prepared the day before at the Sawdon Easter Craft Day. Ashleigh Mudd led the proceedings, after which all adjourned to church. The hymn singing was enlivened by children’s hand-bell ringing and the story, which replaced a formal sermon, was read by Helen Wright. Children who were past or present members of Brompton and Sawdon Primary School sang the Peruvian Gloria responses. Afterwards the Easter egg hunt took part in the church and porch. Easter cake and biscuits had been prepared by members of the church. Dr Don Jones will take Matins on Sunday at 11am and afterwards chair the start of the church’s annual general meeting with the Vicar, the Rev Stuart Hill joining as soon as he is able.

EAST AYTON

On film - The jubilee committee is hosting an evening of old films of the area in the village hall, courtesy of Yorkshire Film Archives, on Thursday, April 12 starting at 7.30pm. Entrance costs £3 and refreshments will be available.

On stage - Professional theatre groups Paines Plough and Tamasha are putting on the play I Wanna Be Yours in the village hall on Saturday, April 21. HELMSLEY

RNLI bingo - The Helmsley fundraising branch of the RNLI is holding a prize bingo night and raffle in the Scouts’ Hut, on Saturday, April, 21 at 7pm.

HOVINGHAM

Village market - There will be more than 60 indoor and outdoor stalls at the monthly village market on Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. The three community stalls are The Karen Hilltribes Trust (KHT), a charity working with the Karen people of North Thailand to help them build a better future; The Woodlands Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity; and Dementia Hub which is run by volunteers and offers support to the area’s families, carers and anyone who is having to cope with dementia. Market regular Yorkshire Rapeseed Oils are celebrating 10 years in business. The Community cafe will be run by Hovingham Cricket Club and the volunteer market manager is Graham Mason.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Give or take - A Give or Take Day will be held in the Memorial Hall on Sunday from 9am to noon. Goods may be delivered the day before between 6pm and 8pm and from 8am onwards on the Sunday.

Entertainer - Dave Weston will be performing at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday at 8.30pm.

Sturdy Court - The next domino drive at the centre is on Monday, April 9 at 7.30pm.

Prayer meeting - The Julian Prayer Group will meet on Tuesday, April 10 at 6.30pm in St Chad’s RC Church. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Any inquiries can be made to the Rev Tania Brosnan.

Amnesty International - Paul Wordsworth will speak about York’s City of Sanctuary at the next meeting on Thursday, April 12 at 1.30pm at the home of member Barbara. The regional conference will be held on Saturday, June 9 at the Friends’ Meeting House, Scarborough.

Messy Church - The next session of Messy Church will be on Monday, April 16 at the Methodist Church from 4pm to 6pm.

Plastic reduction - The Environment Group has produced little 50-page shopping-list pads which remind people to take less plastic home when they go shopping. They are available, at £1 each, from The Moorside Store and Summit Bakery.

Tuesday Group - The meeting in the Methodist Jubilee room at 7.30pm on Tuesday, April 10 will be a musical evening with the Rev Norma Davey. The leader is Jean and the tea hostesses are Gillian and Julia.

MALTON

Bridge club - The latest session of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMP pairs competition was won by John Hayton and Philip Mason with 56 points. In second place were Keith Freeman and Richard Hilton with 44 points, followed by Anne Avery and Graeme Matthew with 33 points. Last Thursday the North-South winners were Ruth Mattingly and Chris Gardner while Sally Beswick and Teresa Belt took the East-West honours. Philip Mason, Richard Hilton, Mike and Annette Jackson, representing Malton, won a Yorkshire inter-club teams competition at Tickton last week.

MARTON AND NORMANBY

Garden club - The March meeting was opened by chairman Bill Tweedle who welcomed some new visitors to the meeting. The winner of the club’s Cross Cup winner was Sue Richardson. Mr Tweddle gave us an update about the improving health of treasurer Claire Lund to whom club members sent their best wishes. Returning speaker Brian Hutchinson who gave many useful practical tips in his talk Spring in the Greenhouse. The next meeting in the village hall will be on April 10 at 7.30pm when Michael Myer will give a talk called Scents and Scentability. Admission is £2 and includes entry into the evening’s raffle and tea, coffee and biscuits.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive held in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Bingo - There will be a prize bingo in the village hall at 7.30pm on Saturday.

PICKERING

Bridge Club - The fifth and last session of the handicapped pairs was won by Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 78.25 per cent. In second place were Terence Boyle and June Greener with 54.5 per cent. Third spot went to Sue Hardman and Dorothy Cordery with 54.25 per cent. The overall winners are Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall.

Get in the swing - An evening of live swing music featuring Howard Beaumont, Roger Maughan, and Bob Malinowski will be held at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, at 7.30pm on Friday. Jazz festival - The sixth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz which will be held from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. If tickets are bought before Thursday, May 31 they cost £5 for the Sunday Spirituals concert and £50 for the Monday to Saturday concerts. Individual tickets for any of the Monday to Saturday concerts cost £10. After May 31 prices increase to £12 and £60 respectively. Parish meeting - The annual parish meeting will be held in the church rooms on Monday, April 9 at 7.30pm. Agenda items include grants to local community groups, update from the recreation ground committee, speed monitoring gun, defibrillator training and provision of planters. There will be an open forum for residents to highlight issues of concern, propose community projects and express views on where they would like council tax money to be spent. SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am Holy Communion service for Easter Day. The service began with Richard, together with the children, lighting the Easter candle and bringing it into the body of the church before all the lights and candles were lit. Rev Firth’s sermon reflected on the nature of God and the love shown to the world in the resurrection of Jesus. The children spent some time making an Easter Garden which was then brought into church as the congregation then heard of their time together learning about the Easter story and their Easter egg hunt. Sidespeople were Enid Plevey, Sue Johnson and Clare Firth assisted in welcoming people into church by George and Toby Watson. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Jim Baird and Andrew Watson assisted with the distribution of communion and Clare Firth and Enid Plevey served refreshments. Reader Judith Dean led the 11am service of Holy Communion and preached on the discovery of the empty tomb. Becky Cremer read and Tim Cremer led the intercessions. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Liz and Josh Cremer ran the Sunday Club, Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Methodists - The early Easter Day service and Holy Communion was led by Dr Rev Kevin Ridd. Doreen Lawson accompanied on the organ and Margaret Neave gave the bible reading. This was followed by breakfast and fellowship with friends from Ayton Methodist Church. The 10am service was led by Bob Jackman. The service tis Sunday at 10.30am will be taken by Laura McGarry.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s - The morning worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Barbara Grice. On Sunday, April 15 there will be a joint service with friends from the Methodist Church at 10.30am. The preacher will be the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and at the close of the service everyone is invited to stay for soup and pudding. The Bishop of Selby, the Rt Rev Dr John Thomson, will conduct a confirmation service on Sunday, April 22 at 10am. Refreshments will be served in the village hall after the service.

Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston and donations for coffee will be given to the Air Ambulance. The service of reflection on Good Friday afternoon was led by members of the worship team. Tea was enjoyed in the hall after the vigil. The Easter Sunday morning service was led by Diane Robinson. The welcomer was Kim Canterbury, who also read the Bible lesson from Corinthians. Chris Cade led an opening time of praise and worship. India and Kiara Heron assisted in the stripping of the cross and helped Sandra Cade as the congregation’s flowers turned the cross from a thing of tragedy to one of triumph. The Superintendent Minister, the Rev Graham Morgan, will lead this Sunday’s worship at 10.30am.

Messy Church – Youngsters will meet at the Methodist Church for tea at 4.45pm on Saturday to explore, Easter - What Happened Next? There will be stories and songs, worship and messy craft.

Live performance - Tribute act Lee ‘Elvis’ Johnson will be making his first appearance at the Sports and Community Club on Saturday at 9pm. Entry is free.

Letters draw - H Green won £45 in Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday. The letters were H, L and U.

WESTOW

Plant stall - The annual village plant stall which raises money for the upkeep of the play area will be held on Sunday, May 6, starting at 10am. Donations of plants can be taken on the day.

Open house - Volunteers will be serving hot and cold drinks together with slices of cake in the cricket club pavilion on Saturday and Sunday between noon and 3pm each day. WI REPORT

Appleton-le-Moors - Mrs Humphreys presided at the March meeting when new members, guests and members of neighbouring branch Cropton were welcomed. Appleton-le-Moors members Tricia Mainprize, who is manager of the Helmsley fund-raising branch of St Catherine’s Hospice, organised a fashion show. Some members walked the catwalk, Sheila compared the evening, Lizzie provided the music and Gill and Patsy assisted Tricia. The night was a great success with donations totalling just more than £300. Gardener Jeff Andrews will be the guest at this month’s meeting.
