DESPITE cold and soggy weather, more than 300 runners turned out for the Helmsley 10k on Easter Sunday.

The first man over the line in 35 minutes 53 seconds was Joe Dale, of the London-based Victoria Park Harriers running group.

The first woman was Helen Cross, of the York Triathlon Club, with a time of 39 minutes 26 seconds.

All the runners received a mug and an Easter egg.

As well as the main 10k, there were several events for juniors and children as well, with categories from the toddler dash up through the age groups to an event for 14-year-olds.

More than 70 children entered the children’s races and all the entrants received a chocolate Easter egg at the end.

Organiser Carol Swift, of the Helmsley Recreational Charity, said: “Despite the weather which was cold and very wet underfoot the run went very well.

“The Easter eggs that were left over we donated to York Hospital children’s A&E department, who were very grateful.

“The run committee would like to thank all the sponsors for all their support and a special thanks to everyone who turned out to help on such a cold day.”

This run was the ninth annual Helmsley 10k run. It is a multi-terrain race which takes place on road, forest track, footpaths and fields, with the finishing line on the sports field.

The race sponsor was the energy company Engie, formerly Keepmoat, which is currently constructing a development of 99 new homes, including a 64 apartment "extra care" facility, on the northern edge of Helmsley.

Ms Swift added: “If you would like to join the 10k committee to help organise this successful event, we would love to hear from you on 01439 771072.”
