A NATIONAL bellringing competition has been hailed as a big success for Selby.

Teams of bellringers from around the country visited Selby Abbey on March 24, with ringers and visitors also enjoying a beer tent - which served Bullseye Bitter from Selby-based Jolly Sailor Brewery - and locally sourced food.

A spokesman for the Selby team who hosted the event said: "With ringers in Saturday's contest at Selby ranging from teenagers to those in their seventies, it demonstrated that ringing is a hobby that can be pursued throughout one's life and has teams that consist of members from many different walks of life.

"In short, I would say that the day was a great success. It was clearly enjoyed by our visitors and showed that the bellringing team at Selby can do more than just ring the bells. The Selby team will look forward to the next time that we are honoured to be asked to organise this prestigious event again."
