PIGLETS and sows have been rescued by firefighters but others died in a massive fire.

The breeding shed near Normanby was totally destroyed in the blaze, which broke out at lunchtime on Saturday.

"Unfortunately some animals have perished in the blaze," said a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

"Crews have used main jets, breathing apparatus, hose reels and portable pumps to extinguish the fire. A number of sows and piglets have been rescued."

The spokesperson said fire crews from Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Helmsley and Malton, along with a water bowser from Boroughbridge and welfare unit from Thirsk, were called out to tackle the fire, which was extinguished by late afternoon.

The fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault but the incident remained open for a revisit by officers.
