CONFUSION has arisen over new traffic signs in Norton.

The signage has been put up on the pedestrian island at the junction of Church Street and Welham Road, following the implementation of the 7.5 tonne weight restriction over the level crossing.

Two signs point to Malton in opposite directions with a further two directing traffic to the industrial estate, again in opposite direction.

The issue has been raised by Norton Town Council and County Councillor Keane Duncan.

Cllr Duncan said: “I could not believe my eyes when I first saw the new signs. In fact, I had to drive by again to check I wasn’t going mad.

“The important thing now is that the signs are corrected as soon as possible and no further mistakes are made.

“I am told that the designers have been to the site and are now making arrangements for them to be re-orientated.”

Cllr Duncan added: “They are also undertaking a review of the signs still to be put up to ensure there are no further problems and that the information is unambiguous.

"There is a lot of confusion, and we have already seen lorries stuck at the crossing and unable to turn round. The situation is spilling over into residential cul-de-sacs.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

A North Yorkshire County Council spokesman said: “Our designers have been to the site and are making arrangement for the signs which are positioned incorrectly to be amended.

“They will also review the remaining signs to be put up to ensure there are no further problems. We apologise for any confusion caused.’’
