APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History Group - The annual general meeting of the History Group was held in the village hall recently. It was noted that a loss of £1,554 had been made during the last financial year, however, this was the result of spending £2,034 which remained of the HLF Grant. The book Luminaries of Appleton-le-Moors has already sold over half its print run. From the accounts it was seen that a substantial profit was recorded by groups’ finances. The two talks, The Harrison Collection, and The Colsterdale Excavation were successful as were copies of Appleton and the Great War and A Bakers Dozen. It was decided to have another 20 copies of the latter printed. A further two formal talks will be held during the 2018/19 season the monthly Tea & Chat sessions would continue although due to falling attendances this may be its final year. The final Tea & Chat for this season will be at 2pm on Monday, April 9, which is a change of date change due to Easter. The recent Tea, Chat & History meeting in the village hall on Monday saw a reduced attendance because of the bad weather. The slide show again proved popular and homemade cakes and tea provided by Shirley Brooke were appreciated.

AYTON

Craft fair - There will be a craft fair in the village hall, Wilsons Lane, East Ayton on Easter Monday, April 2, from 10am to 3pm. Tables cost £10. To reserve a table, phone Joy Tomlinson on 01723 862170.

Matinee theatre - The village hall in East Ayton is hosting matinee performance by the touring Library Theatre Group of two acts from Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. Bed Among the Lentils and A Lady of Letters will be performed on Thursday, March 22 at 2pm. Tickets are on sale at Derwent Valley Bridge Library, Pickering Road, West Ayton and cost £10.50 each with 50p from each ticket donated to the library funds. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday will a 9.30am Holy Communion followed by coffee.

Tour de Farce - Brompton by Sawdon Radio Players presented its annual comedy in the village hall last Friday and Saturday. Written by Marcel Guillou, it was subtitled Bunty Rides Again. Themed on the Tour de Yorkshire which, this year, is going to pass along the A170 at the top of the village, Brompton was renamed Lower Twaddle. The actors were Anne Pilgrim Green, Pamela Shaw Johnston, Bob Muir, Ron Carey, Charles Hill, Liz Pryor, Demelza Robinson, Wilbert Zijlmans and Alex Scott. Lynne Heaton led the supper team.

Local History Society - At the meeting of Brompton Local History Society on Wednesday, March 7, Trevor Pearson spoke about the Scarborough Society’s survey in Raincliffe Woods and their excavation on Castle Hill, Brompton. In Ann and John Deehan’s garden close to Castle Hill, an excavation found artefacts ranging from Middle Stone Age flints to 19th century clay pipe stems all in addition to evidence of substantial Medieval buildings. Copies of the report of the excavation are available from Chris Evans for £3. It is expected that a further excavation will take place in September on the Castle Hill. Marie Woods, field officer of the Scarborough Society, outlined plans for more work in Brompton. The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 4 at 7.30pm in the village hall when Sheila McGeown will talk about Hackness.

Community lunch - The next Village Ventures community lunch will be held on Wednesday, March 21. The doors will be open from 12.15pm and the lunch served for 12.30pm.

Domino drive - The final domino drive of the winter season will be held on Thursday, March 22.

Parish council - The next parish council meeting will be held on Monday, March 19 at 7.30pm.

GILLING EAST

Hewbrew perspective - John Barnett, a Messianic Jew who read theology at Oxford University is to give a talk called Are You Satisfied With Your Life? in the village hall on Saturday, March 24 at 7.30pm. It has been organised by the Holy Cross Church and after the talk members of the audience will be able to ask John questions. He has taught how to study the Bible from a Hebrew perspective for more than 20 years. John runs Abigail Trust and has written many booklets to promote the study of the Bible. Refreshments will be available on the night.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon Club - The president of the Ladies Luncheon Club welcomed 43 members and two guests at the Pheasant Hotel, Harome, on Wednesday, April 7. The speaker was John Grimshaw, a director of The Yorkshire Arboretum charity at the Castle Howard, which strong links with Kew. He gave a slide show covering the work done looking after all the trees, lakes and wildlife. The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Pheasant Hotel. HOVINGHAM

Mother’s Day - The Methodist Chapel was the host for the village ecumenical Mothers’ Day service which was conducted by the Rev Tanya Short. It included an interesting challenge to see how many words could be made from Mothering Sunday. Joyce Skelton was the organist and Christine Horne, Carol Battersby and Graham Mason read the passages from the Bible. Coffee was enjoyed after the service. Members of the church and chapel will get together again on Palm Sunday at Slingsby when there will be a procession around that village.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz and buffet in the village hall on Saturday with doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There can be a maximum of four people per team. Entry is £10 per person. Pre-booking is essential for catering purposes. Quizzers can take their own drinks. Glasses are available if required. KIRBYMOORSIDE

Dance showcase - The Sarah Louise Ashworth dance school in Kirkbymoorside is holding its bi-annual showcase at Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, on Saturday at 5.15pm and Sunday at 2pm and 5.30pm. Messy Church - The next session of Messy Church will be on Monday, March 19 in the Methodist Church from 4pm to 6pm.

Bridge club - At the latest game Bob Pryce and Chris Baxter were top North/South with 59.7 per cent. Barry Smith and Bob Wardell were a close second with 59.3 per cent. East/West winners were Christine Roberts-Holland and Bryan Wilson with 57.9 per cent. Sue Shuttleworth and Janet Sutor were runners-up on 54.7 per cent. Play of the week went to Lesley and Timothy Vessey.

Sturdy Court - A domino drive will be held at the centre on Monday, March 26 at 7.30pm.

Churches Together - The Churches Together group will hold a fellowship meal at the Methodist Church on Saturday, March 24 at 6.30pm. Father Kentigern will provide the main course and there will be bring and share desserts. All Saints Church - The annual parochial church meeting will be held on Monday, March 19 at the bowling clubhouse at 7.30pm. Reports will be given from the churchwardens and priest in charge, new members of the parochial church council will be elected and the list of sidespeople updated.

Domino drive - The bowling club’s last domino drive of the season will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Tuesday Group - A representative of Next Steps will be the speaker at the meeting of the Tuesday Group on at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 27, in the Jubilee room at the Methodist Church. The leader will be Kath and Gwen and Sonja will be the tea hostesses.

Marie Curie - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie’s annual sponsored daffodil walk in Farndale takes place on Saturday, March 24. For more details and entry form, phone June 01751 431160. There are two walks, both led by rangers from the North York Moors National Park Authority, starting at 10am. There is a short walk by the river and a longer walk taking in more difficult terrain.

LASTINGHAM

Concerts - Four concerts are to be held at St Mary’s Church this spring. On Friday, April 13, The Thorne Trio will be performing, followed a fortnight later on Friday, April 27 by Kirkbymoorside Brass Band with musical director Sarah Woodward. York City Gospel choir will be singing on Saturday, May 12 and on Friday, May 25 soloists from Opera North will provide an evening of operatic favourites on the theme of A Woman’s Life and Loves. MALTON

Bridge club - After the cancellation of the previous week’s sessions, Malton Bridge Club resumed its activities last week with the handicap pairs on Wednesday. The winners were Anne Avery and Madeleine Webber with 63.6 per cent followed by Philip Mason and Richard Hilton with 58.5 per cent and Mike Jackson and Rob Ashdown with 49.6 per cent. In the Thursday afternoon pairs, North-South winners were Anna Weaver and Tricia Pearce ahead of Margo and Ernest Smith, while East-West winners were Josie Halliwell and Richard Hilton followed by Audrey Shaw and Philip Mason. In the final Yorkshire League fixtures of the season, Malton A lost 15-5 at York A but finished in the top half of division one for the third consecutive season. Malton B’s match with Leeds D was postponed.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of Pickering Lacemakers on Saturday from 10am to 3pm in the village hall.

NAWTON

Bingo - The village hall is the venue for Harome Bowling Club’s fundraising prize bingo at 7.30pm on Saturday, March 24.

Prizes needed - Committee members of the Beckett Recreation Ground are hold a bingo session in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. If anyone can donate a prize, get in touch with Chris Rymer or Gordon Harrison. The event is to raise funds to maintain the facilities at the field.

Spring clean - Easter Monday activities begin on April 2 with village spring clean at 10am. Anyone taking part should take gloves, black bin bags, strong brushes, wheelbarrows and spades to help with the tidy up. At 10.30am there will be the start of the grand potato challenge with people able to collect their potato from the pavilion. The potatoes can be grown in any compost or soil until the summer family fun day on Sunday, July 15 when the potato weigh in will be held.

PICKERING

Global prayers - Because of the recent bad weather, the Pickering committee of the Women’s World Day of Prayer cancelled the March 2 service. It will now be held on Friday at 2pm at the Methodist Church.

Concert - Stape Silver Band will hold a concert on Saturday, March 24 in the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm. The programme will include arrangements of popular music, film themes and traditional brass band music. The concert will also feature the training band and the Pickering Junior School brass class. Refreshments will be served at the interval and there will also be a raffle. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Television House, Market Place, or pay at the door.

Ceilidh - There will be a ceilidh in aid of Save the Children in the Memorial Hall on Saturday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. The Jack Hare Ceilidh band, with a caller, will be performing. Hardy Plant Group - The annual meeting of Pickering Horticultural Society took place on January 18 at the Memorial Hall. It was attended by 33 members. Apologies were given by seven people. The following officers were elected for 2018 – chairman, Irene Pawson; 2018 programme, Iris Worker; treasurer, Marilyn Acomb; secretary/refreshments, Di Pool; Winn Baldwin; membership, Lesley Jaram; plants, Sharon Colley and refreshments, Janet Ambler.

Carers meet - There will be a meeting of the Carers Cuppa and Wellbeing Group at the Friends’ Meeting House, on Wednesday, March 21 from 10am to noon.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive at the Recreation Club, on Thursday, April 5 at 7.30pm.

Live act - The Dreamettes will be appearing at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, April 28 at 7.30pm. Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, March 26 from 11am to noon. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 17, 39 and 29. This week’s draw will be increased to £375.

Quiz - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

RILLINGTON

Tidying up - A Love Where You Live action morning to clear litter and weeds from around the village will be held on Saturday, March 24. Participants should meet in the village hall car park between 9.30am and 11.30am to collect sacks and pickers and gloves. There is no need to stay for the full session, half an hour would be appreciated by the organisers.

Quiz - Six teams playing for £50 in prize money took part in Jennie’s quiz at the Fleece Inn. The winners with 55 points were Gary’s Team, second were Team @the Bar and third Honeymooners. The £12.50 jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz will be on Friday, March 23.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Derek Orwin. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. The Lenten prayers were led by the Rev Mary Jackman and Mrs Orwin lead the prayers of Intercession. Bible readings were given by Sheila Gray, who read Psalm 32, Margaret Neave read from Corinthian and Tina Greenley read from St Luke’s Gospel. In his address Mr Orwin spoke of how God is always ready to forgive and also talked of how Jesus used parables or stories to explain His teachings to the people. Spring plants were given to the women in the congregation to celebrate Mothering Sunday. The preacher this Sunday at 10.30am is the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and Holy Communion will be observed.

St Martin’s - The Vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion for Mothering Sunday. He asked the congregation for their reflections on what motherhood means. During the final hymn, the children helped give out flowers and cards to members of the congregation either as a celebration of being a mother or in memory of the mothering received in earlier years. Jim and Marion Baird were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Jean Donovan led the intercessions. Sue Johnson served refreshments. The Rev Moreland led and preached again at the 11am service of modern worship. The band played worship songs to begin and end the service and some quiet reflective music during the lighting of candles and distribution of flowers and cards from the Mothers’ Union. Jenny Bland gave the Bible reading, Liz Cremer was the sidesperson and Mary Otway served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - Morning worship on Sunday was led by Barbara Grice who took the theme of Mothers in the Bible. Bill Hyndford played the keyboard and the lesson of baby Moses in the bullrushes was read by Christine Ashton. Sidespersons were Angela Holdsworth and Susan Mennell. Coffee was served at the end of the service by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, March 25 at 9am when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate.

Quiz - A total of £125.10 was raised from the recent quiz held at the East Riding pub.

Letters draw - There was no winner of Saturday’s Sherburn FC letters draw. The letters were M V and X. This week’s prize fund is £90.

Messy Church - Youngsters heard the story of Florentina and her family in Panama and how they had been given a new life because of Fairtrade. The parable of the Good Samaritan was acted. to remind of us who our neighbours are, and it’s not just the folk next door. The big art picture was of flags from many nations with a praise statement in the relevant language underneath and will be on display in the Link at the Methodist Church. The next Messy Church will be on Saturday, April 14 at 4.45pm.

Luncheon Club - Members of the Senior Citizens’ Luncheon Club will meet on Wednesday, March 21 from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport within the village can be arranged, by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Methodist news - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Pat Woodley. The target of £200 to be raised for the Circuit breakfast for the homeless at Westborough Methodist Church has almost been reached. The all-age service for Mothering Sunday was led by the Rev Dr Robert Whitfield, assisted by his wife, Brenda. The steward was Jean Brown, who was assisted with the Lenten Liturgy by Evie Cade. Chris Cade played the organ and led the opening worship and Robin Magowan played guitar. The PowerPoint was operated by Liz Aconley. The story of baby Moses was acted out and flowers were given out to the congregation. After worship lunch, organised by Sandra Cade and helpers, was served in the chapel hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the worship team.

Open gardens - The village will be having an open gardens day on Sunday, July 22 from noon to 5pm. Anyone would like to open their garden should phone Barbara Grice on 01944 711038 before Saturday, March 31.

SINNINGTON

People’s guild - John Paul was the speaker at the Sinnington People’s Guild meeting on Tuesday, March 6. After selling his business he bought a yacht and in 1980, after navigation training but with little sailing experience, he, his wife, three daughters and a “borrowed son” sailed out of Scarborough harbour for a 13-month voyage around the Mediterranean and across to Egypt. Tea and biscuits were served. The next guild meeting is on Tuesday, March 20 at 7.15pm when John MacKenzie from the Malton Food Bank will be the speaker.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The meeting on Monday, March 5 was won by Pat and George Donnor with 66.7 per cent. In second place with 59.5 per cent were Lynda Lockwood and Carole Dixon.

WI REPORTS

Ebberston and Allerston - In February members visited the Beck Isle Museum, Pickering, and were guided around the exhibits by the museum manager, Ella Voce. Members particularly enjoyed seeing the printer’s workshop, the work of local photographer Sydney Smith and the old Ebberston funeral cart. The afternoon was rounded off with tea and biscuits at the Forest and Vale Hotel. Mick Picknett will give a talk about the RNLI in Ebberston Village Hall on Tuesday, April 10 at 7.15pm. The branch welcomes new people to join them.

Middleton Aislaby and Wrelton - Libby Butler from Helmsley, the owner of Atsuki, a shop which specialises in pearls and other contemporary jewellery, was the speaker at the meeting on Wednesday, March 7. Her talk was called The Journey of a Pearl and anyone who had some pearls was able to show them to Libby to discover a little bit more about them. 

Snainton - The third meeting of the branch’s centenary year took place on Tuesday, March 6 in the village hall when Angela Howgate welcomed 41 members and three visitors. Forthcoming events include the group meeting in Ebberston on Thursday, March 22 at 7pm, Spring Council meeting at Scarborough Spa on Wednesday, April 18, the GCHQ visit on Thursday, May 10 followed by a meal at Walkers restaurant and the Anglo-Indian lunch in Ebberston. The darts final had been cancelled due to the snow but has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Nawton Pavilion. The speaker was Katie Purcell with her medical alert dog Archie. Katie suffers from a rare illness which makes her blackout up to 10 times a day. Archie can detect when this is going to happen and alerts her to sit or lie down so she doesn’t injure herself. Katie now competes as an international swimmer and has a job with the NHS. The winners of the competition for a letter from home to the Home Front was won by Anne Pilgrim Green, second was Liz Pryor and third was Sylvia Middleton. The next meeting is on Tuesday, April 10 when Ann and Cyril Marshall will talk about their laser shooting experience.

YCA REPORT

Rillington - The annual general meeting of Rillington and District Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association in the village hall was attended by 17 members and four prospective members. After reports from the chairman and secretary, the treasurer reported that the funds are low. A decision was made to hold the subscription at £15 but charge members and guests £2 per meeting which will include a raffle ticket. The trophy for most points gained in the 2017 competitions was won by Valerie Gilbert with 48 points, second was Sue Butler (30 points) and joint third were Babs Buckley and Caroline Neuff (18 points). The following officers were elected to serve for the next 12 months - chairman and competition secretary, Eileen Myers; vice-chairman, Louise Tindall; treasurer, Marjorie Grice; deputy treasurer, Lorna Mastaglio; secretary and press secretary, Sue Butler; programme secretary, Tracey Ireland and representative on village hall committee, Valerie Gilbert. During the business meeting which followed, names were taken for the YCA annual general meeting at Askham Bryan, the North Riding Spring meeting at Malton Rugby Union Club and the Scarborough Area lunch. Also mentioned were the Yorkshire Day celebrations at Tennants of Leyburn and the members’ afternoon at Stokesley. A list of classes for the YCA section at Ryedale Show was available to view as was a copy of the YCA constitution. Anne Baron will be the speaker at the April meeting the speaker will be. Valerie Gilbert and other members, who are involved in the branch entry for the YCA annual craft competition, displayed to members the progress they have made and invited other members to take part. After the business meeting, Barbara Grice entertained with three games of stand-up domino bingo and a selection of readings. Lorna Mastaglio sold tickets for the raffle.
