APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Playing fields - The Appleton-le-Moors Fields in Trust committee is having an open meeting will at 11am in the Moors Inn on Saturday, March 3. A number of events are being planning this year which will help to upgrade the playing fields, including a Tree planting day in late March. It will include refreshments. A new No Dogs notice has been installed at the entrance gate to the playing fields.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The All Saints church chandelier and brass candlesticks were polished to perfection by a band of helpers of all ages on Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes were cooked and eaten and it was agreed that this is now a firm fixture on All Saints’ calendar. The service on Sunday is at 8am and will be Holy Communion using the Book of Common Prayer.

Domino drives - The last domino drive of the winter season will be on Thursday, March 22. The proceeds of the winter domino season have all be in aid of the village hall. The sessions have been run by David and Elaine Mudd. Mr Mudd will also be organising an additional domino drive at 7.30pm on Friday, March 16 in aid of Snainton Bowling Club. Admission will be £2 including refreshments.

Quiz - The closing date for Brompton School’s countryside quiz is Wednesday, March 28. It is £1 to enter and the quiz sheets are available from the school or by sending £1 and a stamped addressed envelope to Countryside Quiz, 2 Sawdon Lane, Brompton by Sawdon YO13 9DT.

Gardening club - The club’s next meeting is in the village hall on Wednesday, February 28 at 7.30pm when Helen Jones will give a talk called A Camera in the Garden.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a family quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church in the Crown Inn on Sunday, March 4 at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. Phone 01751 417343 for further details.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Tuesday Group - Members will meet in the Jubilee Room at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 27 for an open evening for the Women’s World Day of Prayer. Daisy will be the leader and members will serve light refreshments at the close.

Menzown - Member and local naturalist Jim Pewtress spoke at the February meeting about British birds and moulting. He explained why they moult, its frequency and stages. He said that bird feathers have up to 11 different uses. Mike Goslin was elected treasurer, following the death of Roy Bishop. Ian Watson has joined the planning committee. Club secretary Rhys Thomas will speak at next month’s meeting about Quakers in business and industry. The meeting will start at 7.30pm in the King’s Head. New members are welcome with the first visit being free.

Bridge club - At the latest game, North/South winners were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 64 per cent. They were well clear of Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter on 54 per cent. The winners had eight outright tops. East/West winners were Bo and Tony Simpson with 72 per cent Chris Brett and Clarissa Napier were second with 56 per cent. Play of the week went to Jane Baldwin and Ann Scott.

Book Group - Robert Harris’ book Munich will be discussed by the book group in the library on Monday, March 5 from 2pm to 3pm. New members are welcome and if you would like a copy of the book phone or text 07800 764753 and leave a message and someone will get back to you.

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive for a talk by Jed Lee called Chasing the Light and Lights. After four visits to Norway he has taken some stunning images of southern parts of the country and the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle. The next meeting is on Thursday, March 1 when Ray Brammall from Doncaster Camera Club will be give a talk entitled All Kinds of Everything.

Ladies Fellowship - Kathy Robson opened the annual general meeting in the library on Wednesday, February 14 with a poem. Members looked back at the speakers and various activities and outings which were enjoyed during the past year and made plans for the coming year. It was decided to make another blanket for charity and members were asked to think about knitting a square a week during Lent. The pattern can be obtained from Kathy or Carol. Dorothy Collis had prepared a financial report and subscriptions remain unchanged. There were thanks and flowers for Kathy and helpers. The birthday girls were Joan Baines, Margaret Gamble, Norma Griffiths and Chrissie Wright. The evening ended with a faith supper, cups of tea and time for catching up. The next get-together is on Wednesday, March 14 for some spring-cleaning at All Saints Church where members will meet from 6.30pm.

Live music - Local band Time Is Tight will be performing at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday at 8.30pm.

Band concert - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band’s next concert in the Memorial Hall is on Sunday, March 11 at 7.30pm. It will feature the senior, community and junior bands with a preview of the national area test piece Odyssey. Lent lunches - Churches Together in Kirkbymoorside are hosting a series of lunches during Lent on the theme The Seven Last Words from the Cross. Reflections will be led by different speakers followed by a soup lunch. The lunches will be held at noon at the Methodist Church. The remaining dates and groups are Tuesday, February 27, All Saints; Tuesday, March 6, Methodist; and Tuesday, March 13, Roman Catholic. All donations will go to Water Aid.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive held in the village hall on Monday, March 5 at 7pm.

MALTON

Tackling loneliness - Malton WI have held a free coffee corning in the Milton Rooms as part of its ongoing tackling loneliness campaign. Despite the freezing weather, 17 people enjoyed tea, coffee and cakes made by the WI members. This was the second coffee morning hosted by branch.as part of the campaign and the next will be in a couple of months’ time.

Bridge club - Derek Fox and Philip Mason had a big win in round two of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMP pairs competition, with +59 points. Second were Madge Allison and Richard Hilton with +9 points while Keith Freeman and David Crossland were third with +1. In the club’s inaugural social bridge event on Thursday afternoon there were wins for Anna Weaver and Wendy Patmore as North-South and for Margaret Pepper and Anne Butterworth as East-West.

Domino drive - The village hall will be the venue for a domino drive on Saturday, March 3 at 7.30pm.

NAWTON

Prize bingo - The monthly prize bingo will be held in the village hall on Saturday, March 3 at 7.30pm. It is in aid of hall funds.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Craft and chat - There will be a Craft and Chat session in the village hall on Thursday, March 1, starting at 7pm. Admission is £2 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Willow weaving - Andrea Firth is running a willow weaving workshop in the village hall on Sunday, March 4 from 10am to 4pm. The cost will be £35 per person. PICKERING

Family cinema - The film Cars 3 was shown at the monthly family cinema at Pickering Methodist Church. The next Family Cinema will be on Saturday, March 3 when the animated film Justin and the Knights of Valour will be screened. Doors open at 6pm and the film starts at 6.30pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Popcorn and snacks will be for sale with ice cream and soft drinks available in the interval. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, February 13 for lunch and its annual general meeting under the chairmanship of Charles Weston at the Forest and Vale Hotel. PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society at the RVS building, Hungate, on Wednesday, March 7 at 7pm.

Global prayers - The service for this year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at Potter Hill Methodist Church, on Friday, March 2 at 2pm. A rehearsal will be held at the church this Friday at 2pm. The service has been prepared by the women of Suriname and is called All God’s Creation is Very Good. It will be led by the Rev Ruth Duck and representatives from different denominations in the town will be taking part. Everyone is welcome to join in and be part of the wave of prayer encircling the globe, starting as the sun rises over Samoa, continuing as it makes its way around the earth and ending 36 hours later as the sun sets over America Samoa.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive organised by Pickering Cricket Club at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane on Thursday, March 1 at 7.30pm. will be served at the close.

Museum - Beck Isle Museum is open every day until the end of November from 10am to 4pm with last admissions at 3pm.

Jazz festival - The sixth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz which will be held from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. If tickets are bought before Thursday, May 31 they cost £5 for the Sunday Spirituals concert and £50 for the Monday to Saturday concerts. Individual tickets for any of the Monday to Saturday concerts cost £10. After May 31 prices increase to £12 and £60 respectively. Family history - Ryedale Family History Group are offering free one to one sessions at the library on Tuesday, February 27. The session is for anyone wishing to trace their ancestry and is either not sure where to start or needing some help to progress. The session times are 10.30am, noon and 1.30pm. Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, February 26 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends, old and new, to share in singing songs together, with the added benefit of a biscuit with a cuppa. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

RYEDALE

Transport AGM - The annual general meeting of Ryedale Community Transport will take place on Wednesday, February 28 in Hovingham Village Hall at 11.30am. Refreshments will be provided after the meeting.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by the Rev Mary Jackman. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. The service opened with the Lenten prayers read by Bob Jackman and the element placed at the foot of the cross. Bible readings were given by Michael King, who read from Genesis, and Jan Blower, who read from Mark’s gospel. In her address Rev Jackman talked about being in the wilderness. She referred to the two bible readings and said that people can often feel like we are in a wilderness, alone and not knowing which way to go but with God as our guide we can get to the other side. During the service Holy Communion was observed. The preacher this Sunday at 10.30am is Bruce Clark.

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.3am Holy Communion service for the first Sunday in Lent, He used one of the Bible readings for the day taken from Genesis where God covenants with Noah, after the Flood, that the rainbow will be a sign of God’s love for the world. Dot Francis and Ruth Ware were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Kate Middleton assisted with the distribution of communion, and Clare Firth served refreshments. Reader John Wells led the 11am service of modern worship and preached on the baptism of Jesus as recorded in Mark’s Gospel. Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Helen Swallow read. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with Chloe Proctor. Jenny Bland and Josh Cremer ran the children's Sunday Club, Jo Taylor was the welcomer and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Messy Church - The next session of Messy Church will be on Saturday, March 10, meeting for tea at 4.45pm.

Community Club - There will be a bingo evening at the Community and Sports Club on Saturday. Books on sale from 7.15 with eyes down 8pm.

Letters draw - The letters drawn on Saturday, February 10 were C, E and M. There was no winner.

Methodist news - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee continue to be given to the Circuit breakfast for the homeless held at Westborough Methodist Church, Scarborough. On Shrove Tuesday there was a Pancake Praise which included a bowl of soup, tossing pancakes, praise led by Jean on the guitar. Everyone also heard about the origins of Shrove Tuesday as a preparation for Lent. The craft club met on Thursday at 1.30pm. Sunday worship was led by the worship team with Chris Cade on the organ and Robin Magowan on guitar leading the congregation in a time of worship introducing the themes of the royal names for Jesus. The Lenten reading was by Sandra Cade. Alex Magowan presented the bread and wine and then laid them at the foot of the cross. India, Kiara and Alice showed their ‘Bible Drill’. Crowns were also decorated. Jean Brown led prayers of praise and Liz Aconley the prayers for others. Coffee was shared in the hall afterwards. The service on Sunday is at 10.30am and will be led by the Rev Dr Bob Whitfield.

Quiz - A quiz in aid of the village hall will be at the East Riding pub on Saturday, March 10 at 8pm. It is for teams of up to four people and the entry cost is £1 per person. There will also be a raffle.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Rev Mark Haynes led Sinnington People’s Guild into the season of Lent on Tuesday, February 14. He challenged the Guild with his readings, hymns and meditation and also encouraged the congregation to reflect, not only on abstinence, but also extra devotions and activities. Mark was thanked for his talk by Jill Simpson who was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 27 at 7.15pm when Terence Maw will be the speaker.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - The annual general meeting of the Ladies Group was held on Tuesday, February 13. A committee was selected and three new members welcomed. This year’s programme includes, talks on Chatsworth, Scampston Hall, Macmillan nursing and visits to Stanbrook Abbey and Leyburn. The next meeting will be held in the Methodist hall on Tuesday, March 13 when Fiona and Michael Bennett will talk on an Atlantic Odyssey.

SNAINTON

Easy Band - The village hall is hosting an Easy Band concert on Friday, March 16 at 7.30pm. The members from the Scarborough Music Centre will be playing a varied programme under the baton of Ralph Alder. A bar and refreshments will be available. Tickets at £5 each can be had on the door, or can be bought in advance by phoning 01723 859442. All proceeds are for the village hall and playing field.

TERRINGTON

World day of prayer - The Rev Taff Morgan will lead the worldwide Women’s World Day of Prayer service at All Saints Church at 2pm on Friday, March 2. This year the service has been prepared by the Christian women of the Surinam.

WESTOW

Open for drinks - After the success of the Westow Cricket Club’s table top stall last weekend during the open house in the pavilion, volunteers have decided to have another stall this weekend, February 24 and 25. All items sold will be in aid of the cricket club. There will also be hot and cold drinks plus home baking.

AGM - Westow Church’s annual general meeting will be held on Monday, March 12 at 7pm in the cricket pavilion.

Spring fair - Westow Cricket Club’s annual spring fair will be held on Saturday, March 24 between 10.30am and 1.30pm. It will include a children’s fun run around the cricket ground at 11.30am for children aged 11 years and under.

Save a life - The Royal Life Saving Society UK is hosting a free Save A Baby’s Life workshop on Wednesday, February 28 from 10am until noon. It is aimed at new parents and grandparents, prospective parents and anyone who cares for a baby. It is an informal workshop to teach practical skills to cope in a baby emergency including basic resuscitation and treatment for choking.
