A CHARITY which was founded more than 36 years ago is appealing for more volunteers.

Ryedale Talking Magazine, which is based in Pickering, was set up by a small team in 1981.

Secretary Val Bulidon said members provided a free monthly audio magazine for the residents of Ryedale and all the surrounding areas who find reading difficult or impossible.

“The magazine is recorded on to CDs which are sent out and returned totally post free. The items recorded are individually chosen and read by members of our team of volunteers,” she said.

“The items chosen are very varied in content ranging from printed articles and stories to personal reminiscences and experiences. Although we never meet our listeners, we always have them in mind as we record and do want them to enjoy the items.”

Val said Ryedale Talking Magazine was registered with the Charities Commission and received no regular funding, relying solely on small donations, some awards and their own fundraising projects.

“We have, at the moment, more than 50 listeners, but are always seeking to offer our service to more eligible people as we have been told that there are more than 300 people in the area who are registered visually impaired,” she said.

“So, if you or someone you know would be interested in receiving our magazine, do contact us and we will let you have a sample CD to see if it’s your ‘cup of tea’.”

Val said the team of volunteers was now looking for new recruits.

“Recording sessions are held once a month and have developed into social occasions at which we have lots of chat and fun over coffee and biscuits while awaiting our turn to record,” she said.

“If you feel you could put your reading skills to charitable use, do get in touch with us.

“We are also in need of help with the editing and production of the CDs, as well as with fundraising projects.”

The recording sessions take place on the second Thursday morning of each month in Pickering. The readings are then edited onto CDs and sent out to listeners.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in receiving the service or is interested in becoming a reader, phone Val on 01751 476499.
