APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Annual meeting - Officers elected at the Appleton and Spaunton Commons Protection Association’s annual general meeting were Jonathan Allison (chairman), Alison Elsome (secretary), Geoff Sherwin (treasurer), Andie Cattle, Janet Richardson, Derek Bedford and David Rawlings (committee members). The chairman informed the meeting of progress with the enforcement notice served by the North York Moors National Park Authority to require the owner and CEMEX to carry out the reclamation and landscape works required by planning conditions at Spaunton Quarry. In the open meeting that followed it was reported that Mr Winn Darley’s application to the secretary of State to change the commons boundary is imminent. When the proposal is submitted the Secretary of State will consult the Common Rights Holders and the National Park Authority. If any objections are received there will be a public inquiry.

Tea, Chat & History - The History & Archive Group’s next Tea & Chat session will be at 2pm on Monday, January 8, which is a change of date.

Market milestone - The next market on Saturday, February 3 will be the 100th Hovingham village market.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Brass band - Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band has been busy during the festive period. produce two outstanding Christmas Concerts. The annual Training Band’s concert, Christmas Around the World, was held at All Saints Church. The concert saw the church filled with residents and parents to hear the four training bands, community, beginner, learner and junior. It featured music from Canada to Japan and Mexico to the Ukraine. The concert also saw the first set annual band awards which were presented to being presented to Pippa Williamson (Speight Cup), Theo Flintoft (Edith Butler), Phoebe Langton-White (Robin Butler), Grace Walker (Midland Bank Cup for attendance) and Annabel Kent (Fran Maw Shield). Certificates were given to George Larson and Elise Smith for dedication and to Annie Foster, Jessie Blacklock, Neve Kendall and Connie Moxon for progress. The concert also saw a change of conductors at the helm, Emma Smailes taking her inaugural Community Band Christmas concert, Jeanette Kendall, the Junior Band and Sarah Woodward, the Beginner and Junior Bands. The change was a result of the retiring Senior Band conductor John Woodward standing down in March. The following Sunday, December 17, Sarah Woodward took her first Senior Band Christmas concert. The concert included a Night Before Christmas narration featuring Susan Clay and solos by Jeanette Kendall, Ben Smailes and Rory Towler. The evening saw the second set of band awards which went to Grace Walker (Geoffrey Marshall Cup for musicianship), Steven Kay (Annie Curter Cup), Malcolm Dowson (Keith Maw Shield) and Conor Lally (Rollinson Rosebowl).

Menzown - A total of £215 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at the annual dinner in memory former treasurer Roy Bishop. There will be a thanksgiving service in All Saints Church on Friday at 1pm, followed by a reception at the King’s Head.

Sturdy Court - There will be a domino drive at the centre on Monday, January 15.

Julian meeting - There is no meeting in January. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 13 in the Catholic church.

Amnesty Group - The group will meet on Thursday, January 11 at Chrissie's home. There will be no meeting in February or March. As a letter writing group from January, the group will maintain contact with other local group, its regional representative and Amnesty International UK.

Coffee morning - The monthly coffee morning in All Saints Church will be held on Saturday from 9.30am to noon.

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive, for the small print competition and social evening. Derek Hutchinson won the John Nicoll Trophy for best print with Richard Burdon runner-up.

KIRKDALE

Quiz - The Kirkdale Christmas quiz in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam, is available from local shops and other businesses. The theme is television and radio programmes. Quiz sheets are £1 each and the first three correct entries opened after the closing date of Saturday, January 20 will win prizes of £15, £10 and £5. Quizzers should note there is a correction to clue number 46. The number of letters should be 5,2,3,10.

MALTON

Flower club - Twenty members of Malton and District Flower Club took part in a practice class called A Christmas Cracker. It was judged by Pam Kitchen. The winners were Lorna Mastaglio (novice), Jenny Loseby (intermediate), Kay Clyde (lower advanced), Lynn Dees (advanced), Sue Butler (gold advanced) and Lynn Dees (trophy for best interpretation). A Christmas lunch was held and was followed by entertainment by the committee and a Christmas raffle. The next meeting is on Tuesday, January 16 and features a demonstration by Nichola Davies entitled Twigs and Twine. New members and guests are welcome. Bridge club - Malton Bridge Club’s penultimate session of its championship pairs was won by Stan Bough and Tricia Pearce with 59.4 per cent. John and Beryl Bramall were second with 58.8 per cent, ahead of Derek Fox and Richard Hilton with 57.3 per cent. Derek and Richard have moved into the overall lead with Philip Mason and Annette Jackson in second place and Anne Avery and Madeleine Webber third. The following week, Philip Mason and Mike Jackson were big winners in the positional pairs competition, with Annette Jackson and Robin Ashdown sharing second place with Richard Hilton and Derek Fox. These pairs also occupy the first three places in the overall competition.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Thursday, January 11 at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50, which includes tea, or coffee, and biscuits.

Winter warmer - An afternoon called Winter Warmer, with mulled wine and nibbles, will be held in the village hall on Sunday, January 14 from 2pm to 4pm.

Craft and chat – There will be a craft and chat session in the village hall will on Thursday, January 18 from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is £2 which includes tea, or coffee, and biscuits.

Jumble sale - A jumble sale, organised by the Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club, will be held from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, January 20 in the village hall. Refreshments will also be served. Admission is £1, which includes a drink. Any offers of jumble would be welcome, phone Cathryn on 01751 476592.

PICKERING

Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, January 8 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends, old and new, to share in singing songs together, with the added benefit of a biscuit with a cuppa. Musical Memories is a community interest company and a not-for-profit company. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

Memorial Hall - The January WEA talk will be held in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on on Friday, January 12, when Andrew Husband will speak about the hall. The meeting will start at 7.30pm. There is no charge, but a donation of £2 will help to cover costs.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 28, 29 and 12. This week’s draw will be increased to £140. As well as the £75 weekly prize, which is carried over if there is no winner, there is a monthly consolation prize draw for £50 made on the first Monday of each month.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society will meet at the home of Sue and David Marshall, on Wednesday, January 10 at 7.30pm. The annual open show will be held on Sunday, April 29 at Kirby Misperton Village Hall.

Pantomime - Pickering Musical Society’s pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears will run at the Kirk Theatre from Friday, January 12 to Saturday, January 20, with the exception of Monday, January 15. Family history - Ryedale Family History Group are offering free one to one sessions at the library on the following Tuesdays - January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27. The sessions are for anyone wishing to trace their ancestry and is either not sure where to start or needing some help to progress. The session times are 10.30am, noon and 1.30pm. Anyone interested should book a place in advance at the library in person or telephone 01609 533624. The sessions have to be pre-booked at the library and are not walk in sessions.

Domino drives - There will be a domino drive for Pickering Bowls Club on Friday, January 12 at the Recreation Club at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

Used stamps - The Royal Mail office at the Thornton Road Industrial Estate is the collection point for used postage stamps for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Stamps may be left Monday to Saturday between 8am and 1pm.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - A total of £463 was raised at the Christmas prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre for centre funds. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. There will be no prize bingos at the centre in January and February.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The Christmas sup and sing session was held in the East Riding pub. Music was supplied by Bill Hyndford on his guitar with his grand-daughter, Kayleigh, performing some solos and leading the singing of the carols. Barbara Grice organised the evening and acted as MC. A raffle was run by Betty Flinton and raised £100 for church funds. The Rev Joe Kinsella thanked everyone for coming and presented Bill with a gift to thank him for playing both at the pub and the monthly morning worship services at St Hilda’s. The church was decorated for Christmas by Jean and Keith Usher and Barbara Grice. The tree was erected and decorated by Kevin and Ali Haldenby. Sherburn C of E School held its Christmas service at St Hilda’s when the Rev Kinsella told the story of the Nativity with interaction by the children. Tim Hiley, acting headteacher, distributed certificates for attendance. The Ringrose-Savill Cup for progress was presented to Lewis Sumpter. The service of Lessons and Carols was led by the Rev Kinsella. Sidespeople were Keith Usher and Barbara Grice and music was supplied by Chris Cade on his keyboard as organist Martin Monkman was unable to play through illness. Lessons were read by Chris Miles, Rita Worthy, Eleanor Waller, Christine Ashton, Betty Flinton and Carol Stephenson. At the end of the service tea, coffee and mince pies were served by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be morning worship led by Barbara Grice on Sunday, January 14 at 10.30am.

Christmas lunch - Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club enjoyed a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. After the meal Sherburn Praise Band who played a variety of music from wartime singalong favourites to Christmas carols. Father Christmas gave everyone a small gift and Mrs Christmas read an uplifting poem. The parish council helped to finance the event. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 17 and is the club’s anniversary party. There will be a quiz organised by Barbara Grice. Defibrillator - A defibrillator, accessible to any member of the public, is situated outside the entrance to the Community and Sports Club. Free informal basic training is being offered to anyone who would like to know more about how to use the lifesaving equipment and perform basic CPR. Each session will last about an hour. THORNTON-LE-DALE

Christmas celebrations - The village’s Christmas celebrations began with Churches Together singing carols in the village accompanied by John on his accordion. Coffee and mince pies were served in the Methodist schoolroom. The Methodist carol service was led by the Rev Mark Haynes. The readers were Barbara, Pauline, Mary, Shirley and Douglas. John was the organist. The following Tuesday at mince pies were made by Mary and served by Mary, Joyce at Sue at coffee break. The Rev Ruth Duck led with readings and carols accompanied by Betty. The Christmas Eve morning service was led by the Rev Duck and a retiring collection was taken for the charity Sarcos Volunteers (Syrian refugees) and amounted to £126.80p.

WOMBLETON

Village walk - The annual village walk is on Sunday with a 1.30pm start. It is a circular walk of about two miles. Walkers should meet at the village hall at 1pm for the 1.30pm start. Entry £7 per person to include jacket potato with a choice of filling, followed by a sweet. It is free for children free but must be accompanied by an adult, as are dogs on short leads.
