A MAN was killed in a crash on a North Yorkshire road last night.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the A19 Easingwold Bypass between Thirsk and Easingwold at about 7.40pm on Thursday, where a Vauxhall Viva and a motorcycle had collided.

A spokesman said the rider of the motorcycle, who was aged 27, was killed in the crash.

The driver of the Viva - a 22-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving. He has now been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two passengers in the Viva included a 22-year-old man who was taken to the LGI by air ambulance with serious but not life threatening injuries, and a 17-year-old woman who was taken to York hospital by ambulance with serious but not life threatening injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either vehicle prior to the collision, is asked to contact police.

The crash was one of two serious collisions on the same stretch of the A19 in a little over 12 hours.

A second crash took place in the same area at just before half past eight this morning, closing the road.

The road is now reopen.
