MAJOR improvement work to a notorious A64 junction is to start on Monday.
Work at the Barton Hill junction will convert the crossroads to a staggered junction, aimed at improving visibility and safety at the junction with Mains Lane.
The Barton Hill junction was known for being a site of frequent accidents for many years.
It was the subject of a decades-long campaign by, among others, Ryedale coroner Michael Oakley.
Highways England, who are undertaking the work, say the improvements will benefit over 9,000 drivers a day.
Highways England’s project manager Russell Mclean said: "While the work is being carried out there will be a 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and roadworkers."
No full closures of the A64 are planned, but there will be daytime lane closures and, at times, overnight traffic may be led through the roadworks by a contractor’s vehicle.
The work is expected to be completed towards the end of spring next year.
