APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Parish Council - Faye Snowdon spoke about the six community officers employed by Ryedale District Council at the latest meeting of the parish council in the village hall. A new bench has been located at the corner of Hamley Lane and faster broadband is connected to the village. A map of the village, provided by the North York Moors National Park Authority, which contains the extent of the Conservation Area, listed building and Public Rights of Way, is to be circulated to residents. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 4.

Christmas fair - The Christmas fair held in the village hall raised £520 to be shared equally between the chapel and the church.

History Group - Edward Harrison will give a talk called Exploring the Harrison Collection in the village hall on Tuesday, November 28 at 7pm. Admission is £2.50.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints Church on Sunday will be an 8am communion using the Book of Common Prayer. The Christmas trees for the festival should arrive late next Monday afternoon. They will be put into their stands on Tuesday morning ready for decorating before the preview on Friday, December 1. Most of the trees will stay in place throughout December and will be there for the Christmas Day service which will be at 9.30am.

AGM - The Gardening Club’s annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 29 at 7.30pm.

Lunch volunteers needed - The Village Ventures community lunch took place last Wednesday. The catering team was led by Joan Evans. As we the catering teams are short of people at present, two members from one of the other two catering teams stepped up to help this month. Anyone who would like to help set up the hall the night before, wash up or prepare the food would be welcome. Three catering teams each take responsibility for preparing a lunch every three months. As well as meals taken in the hall they can also be collected for home delivery for people who are housebound or unwell. Quiz - There will be a Christmas quiz in the village hall on Friday, December 8 at 7pm. Entrance is £4 to include supper.

CROPTON

Quiz - There was a full house for the 17th Peacock quiz which raised £303 for hall funds. The evening included pie, peas and gravy with homemade biscuits and tea. A raffle was also drawn.

FARNDALE

African adventure - Farmer and photographer Dave Mead will give an illustrated talk called Five Go Wild in Namibia in the village hall on Friday, December 1 at 7.30pm.

Cake and calendar stall - The 2018 Farndale calendar now available from BATA Kirkbymoorside, the Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, and the Lion Inn. Blakey. It costs £6 and is sold in aid of Farndale Village Hall’s rebuilding project.

Quiz - The general knowledge quiz in the Feversham Arms Inn on Friday raised £221 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive, to hear Ernie Howard from Driffield Camera Club give a presentation titled Drawing Targets around Arrows. He referred to his target as taking good pictures, and the arrows were pointers on how to do this. The next meeting at the club is on the Thursday, December 7 when the annual monochrome competition will be held.

Book group - The Library Book Group meets on the first Monday of each month from 2pm to 3pm. For the meeting on Monday, December 4, members will be reading The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd. If anyone has read, or would like to read the book, they are welcome to join the group. Phone Sheila on 07800 764753 if you require a copy of the book.

Christmas market - There will be more than 30 stalls selling crafted goods, local produce and Christmas gifts at the Christmas market in the Memorial Hall and the main street, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, November 25. It is hoped to have craft activities in the library during the morning. Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will play at 11am. There will be face painting in the Memorial Hall and Father Christmas will be in his grotto in the Dugout at noon until 2pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Entry is free.

Bridge club - The latest game was the second round of the November Handicap Competition. Only one per cent separated the top three at North/South. John Mortenson and Bob Price followed up their first round success with a score of 60.4 per cent for top spot. Cynthia Metcalfe and Peter Small were runners-up with 59.7 per cent. At East/West, Mary Mortenson and Graeme Matthew were top with 55.2 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson were second with 53.6 per cent. Irene and Tim Smith took third place at North/South and also play of the week for a good defensive play.

Indoor stalls - The indoor stalls at the Memorial Hall are growing, alongside the pop-up café. There are new folders on the local countryside to browse through. KIRKDALE

Candlelit services - The candlelit services of Nine Lessons and Carols, led by the choir, at St Gregory’s Minster, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 at 4pm each day. To avoid overcrowding, entry will be by free ticket which will be available from. Tickets will be available from Julia Maynard, The Old Forge, Pockley, York, YO62 7TE from Sunday, November 26. Enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope with requests for tickets and give a contact telephone number in case of bad weather forces a change of venue to St Hilda’s, Beadlam.

GREAT HABTON

Santa at fair - Father Christmas will open the Christmas fair in the village hall on Saturday at 2pm. There will be cakes, toys, Christmas decorations, presents, and competitions, together with raffles and tombolas. The fair will open until 4pm. Teas will be available and entry is free. All proceeds will go towards the restoration of the bells at Kirby Misperton Church.

MALTON

Bridge club - Round four of Malton Bridge Club’s championship pairs was won by Derek Fox and Richard Hilton with 61.3 per cent. In second place with 60.4 per cent were Anne Avery and Madeleine Webber while Mike Jackson and Graham Burgess were third with 59.4 per cent. Overall, Derek and Richard have a narrow lead over Philip Mason and Annette Jackson who are a little ahead of Mike and Graham.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Crafts - There will be a craft day called Raggy Wreath with Flowers in the village Hall on Sunday, December 3 from 10am to 4pm. To reserve a place phone Penny on 01751 474268. There will be a craft and chat evening in the hall on Thursday, December 7 at 7pm. Tea and coffee with biscuits will be served. The entry fee, to include refreshments, is £2.

Hall’s Christmas events - There will be a family Christmas prize bingo held in aid of Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club in the village hall on Saturday, December 9 at 7pm. Drinks and refreshments will also be available. On Thursday, December 14 there will be a Christmas domino drive in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Care at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits. The children’s Christmas party, organised by Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club, is in the hall on Friday, December 22 from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Jumble sale - Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club are having a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, January 20 from 11am to 2pm. Refreshments will be served. Admission is £1 which includes a drink. Any offers of jumble can be made by phoning Cathryn on 01751 476592.

NORTON

Parkinson’s Support - Ryedale Parkinson's Support Group continues to meet at the Trinity Methodist Church on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm. Recent entertainment has been a visit from Lockton and Levisham Hand Bell Ringers, followed this month by Valerie Gilbert with Christmas is Coming, showing some craft suggestions for Christmas. PICKERING

Family cinema - Disney’s animated film Planes 2: Fire & Rescue was shown at the family cinema at the Methodist Church on Saturday. The next screening will be of Despicable Me 3 on Saturday, December 2. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Doors open at 6pm and the film starts at 6.30pm. Pantomime - Pickering Musical Society’s pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears will run at the Kirk Theatre from Friday, January 12 to Saturday, January 20 with the exception of Monday, January 15. Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, November 14 for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Charles Weston. Super draw - There was no winner of Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Super Draw last week. The numbers were 6, 36, and 39. This week’s draw will be increased to £825. The next monthly consolation prize draw will take place on Monday, December 4 for a £100 rollover prize.

Family history - Anyone in the area who wants to find out about their family history will be able to get one-to-one guidance from Ryedale Family History Group. The group is offering the free sessions at the library, The Ropery, on Tuesdays, December 5 and 19 at 10.30am, noon, and 1.30pm. The sessions are aimed at anyone wishing to trace their ancestry who is either not sure where to start or needing some help to make progress.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the purchase of a defibrillator, to be sited in the Market Place, on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Christmas fair - Beck Isle Museum will hold its Christmas fair on Saturday from 10am to 4pm with free entry to the museum.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday, November 30 at 7.30pm.

PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society at the WRVS Hungate Centre, on Wednesday, December 6 at 7pm. New members, visitors, and guests will be madewelcome.

RILLINGTON

Ladies Guild - Nine members were present at the November meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild held in Woodlands Community Centre. Owing to the cancellation of the speaker, members were invited to talk on a subject of their choice, or about an object they had brought with them. At the business meeting which followed, it was decided the future of the Guild is uncertain unless members come forward to assist with its running. All members are to be sent a letter explaining the situation and a decision will be made on the group’s future at the December meeting. Sue Butler sold tickets for the raffle. Janet Clarkson and Elizabeth Saint were the hostesses. Musical entertainment will be provided by David Swann at the December meeting, followed by a faith supper. There will be the draw for a gift to the value of £3.

Quiz time - Ten teams playing for £86 in prize money took part in Jenn’s mega quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Gary’s Team, with Mike, Fiona and Col second and Team @ the Bar third. The £21 jackpot was won by Gary’s Team. Jennie’s Sunday night quiz was won by Mike and Col with another rollover for the jackpot.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Rev Nigel Spencer. The vestry steward was John Earnshaw, the organist was Doreen Lawson, the welcomer was Margaret Harris and Margaret Neave took the offertory. Bible readings were given by Amanda Clayton, who read from Thessalonians, and Margaret Harris, who read from Matthew’s gospel. The Rev Spencer’s address was based on the bible reading the Parable of the Talents and how people should not waste their God-given talents. During the service Holy Communion was observed. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be taken by Rev Kevin Ridd. On Saturday, December 9 at 7.30pm there will be an evening of Christmas music in the chapel with James Aconley. St Martin’s -The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion, which included the annual remembrance and reading of the names of those faithful departed whose funerals had been held in the past 12 months together with other names from members of the congregation. Richard’s sermon was based on the gospel reading of the parable of the vineyard owner who leaves three of his workforce to look after his business in his absence and gives the each a differing quantity of cash to use while away. Rachel Watson, with Jean Donovan and Kim Knight, led the monthly children’s gathering in the church room. Andrew Watson gave a bible reading and also assisted with Jim Baird in the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied hymns on the piano, Sue Johnson and Dot Francis were sidespersons, and Clare Firth served refreshments. Reader Judith Dean led the 11am modern service and Steve Raettig preached on being prepared for Jesus Christ's return to Earth, basing his talk on the same parable used in the earlier service. Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Jenny Bland read. Steve Raettig led the sung worship with Tim Cremer and John Taylor. Liz Cremer and Jean Donovan ran the Sunday Club. Jo Taylor was the welcomer and Elizabeth Bradley and Gwyneth Riley served refreshments after the service.

Autumn fair - The St Martin’s Church autumn fair will be held in the Memorial Hall, on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm. Teas coffee and cakes will be served for which there is no charge but donations towards the work of St Martin’s Church will be gratefully accepted. The stalls will include cakes, jams and marmalades, handicrafts, and bric-a-brac, as well as a tombola, and three different raffles.

SHERBURN

Community club - The monthly quiz at the Community & Sports Club will be held on Sunday at 8pm. It is £1 per person for quiz entry and teams of up to five people are allowed. A free light supper will be provided. The next cash prize bingo will be held on Saturday, December 2. Books go on sale from 7.15pm with eyes down at 8pm. The event is for people aged 18 or over only.

Luncheon club – Members of the Senior Citizen’s Luncheon Club met at the chapel hall where John Porter from the RNLI who gave an update on the latest RNLI news and showed videos of the arrival of the new lifeboat in Scarborough. The next gathering will be the Christmas lunch party on Wednesday, December 20, meeting from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. All senior citizens are invited to share a festive meal. Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee continue to be given to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. The all-age worship on Sunday morning was led by the Worship Team. The organist was Chris Cade and the guitarist was Robin Magowan with Kim Canterbury operating the audio-visual equipment. Liz Aconley told a story, Using Our Gifts’ to introduce the Bible reading of the parable of the talents which was read by Chris Cade. Prayers were led by Sandra Cade who also invited the congregation to share what gifts and talents they had. A gift that the children had made was given out to each member of the congregation so that they could pass this on to someone else. The offering was taken by India and Kiara Heron who also shared in the prayers. After the service, coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Diane Robinson.

Letters draw - There was no winner of Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday. The letters were Q, U and V. The prize fund this week stands at £360.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Sinnington People’s Guild met last Tuesday in the chapel schoolroom when they were entertained by Thornton-le-Dale Ukuleles. Various songs were played and the congregation joined in with the singing and also played tambourines and shakers and had a go at playing a tune on buzzukas. Stephen Ward thanked the ukulele band and Gilbert Dobson for playing his accordian for the hymn. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 28 at 7.15pm when the Rev Jane Pickering will talk about Leading into Advent.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - The Rev Max Moore gave a talk on crime, his work with the probation service and in prisons at the meeting on Tuesday, November 14 which was attended by 21 members. The next meeting will be the Christmas party with entertainment provided by Karen Bishop in the Methodist hall on Tuesday, December 12 at 7.15pm.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Helping children - Shoeboxes were collected at the Methodist Church from church members, the Ladies Group, Mothers’ Union and the school. A total of 74 boxes were taken to Scarborough to be packed and sent by road to Hull before being shipped off to eastern Europe to help poor children.

Ladies Group - Twenty-four members from the Ladies Group enjoyed lunch at Balderson’s Café this month. The event was arranged by Mary. The next meeting will be a Christmas sing-a-long led by Thornton-le-Dale Friends at 2pm on Thursday, December 7 in the Methodist schoolroom, Members are asked to take their five pence pieces.

Bridge Club - The competition held on Monday, November 13 was won by Audrey Shaw and Angela Smith with 59.5 per cent. In second place were Lynda Lockwood and Mary Mortonson with 56.3 per cent.

WOMBLETON

Coffee morning - The Christmas coffee morning will be held on Saturday in the village hall from 10am to 11.30am. There will be a cake stall, raffle and tombola. Entry is £1.50 and includes a hot drink and mince pie.

Domino drives – The village hall will host a domino drive on Saturday, in the village hall at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play includes tea and biscuits. There will also be a domino drive on Wednesday, December 6. Both events are in aid of hall funds.
