A RECENT antiques auction in Malton saw a Georgian chair sell for £10,000.
The auction, run by Boulton & Cooper, had what they described as “some interesting items, and the bidding was very strong.”
Leading the way with “spirited” bidding in the room, and on the telephone, was a Georgian Apprentice piece. This was in the form of an elbow chair.
The auctioneer admitted that he had not seen another like it and, despite some condition issues, it far exceeded expectations, selling for £10,000.
The chair had been consigned from a property on the North Yorkshire Moors, previously the home of an antique collector and dealer. The auctioneers have gradually been disposing of the contents for the last four months and there are still further items to be sold.
Other items from the house included two watercolours by Cicely Barker at £1,500 and £1,100 which were in a group of drawings by noted book illustrators.
In the Jewellery section a solitaire diamond ring of approximately 2.67 carats sold for £6,400 and an opal and diamond bangle realised £2,200.
The next sale at Malton is on December 6.
