A TALK on the thorny subject of Brexit is to take place in Pickering on Wednesday.

The lecture is by Dr Simon Sweeney, senior lecturer in international political economy and business at the University of York.

It will take place from 7pm at Pickering’s Liberal Democrat Club on Smiddy Hill.

Dr Sweeney's talk will be entitled "Is the choice a Hard Brexit or No Brexit?".

He said: "I will summarise where we are on the Brexit process, why we are where we are, and what, if anything, can be done about it.

"I regard our current situation as potentially calamitous for the UK. The truth is that we are in trouble - but the cause is not lost."

Councillor Di Keal from Thirsk and Malton Liberal Democrats said: "Liberal Democrats are pro-European and are fiercely supportive of retaining the excellent benefits the country receives as members of the EU.

"We are hurtling towards a disastrous Brexit and many are asking if we should be reconsidering our position."
